Turtle tp
Five of the 10 species of sea turtles
found around the world migrate along
the east coast of the United States. At
one time some of those species can be
found recuperating at the Topsail facil-
ity the only one of its kind in North.
Carolina.
Anywhere from 100 to 150 nests are
reported every year on Topsail Island.
Besides the loggerhead, four addition-
al species of the endangered marine
amphibians, the Kemp's Ridley, theHawksbill, the Green and the giant
Leatherback, are often sighted from fish-
ing piers or in the surf as they feed A
reminder -all sea turtles are pro-tected
under the Federal Endangered and
Threatened Species Act.
A word for fishermen who catch a
turtle: Simply cut the turtle loose
rather than try to reel it in. The salt
water will quickly rust away any at-
tached hooks, and the turtle will be
none the worse for wear.
The Topsail Kiwanis Club has placed
an educational display about sea turtles
in the ground floor lobby of Surf City
Town Hall. Here are a few simple rules to fol-
low should you encounter .a sea turtle
on the beach:
1) Do not disturb turtles crawling to or
from the ocean.
2) Avoid crowding a sea turtle and do
not try to ride her.
3) Do not shine lights in a turtle's eyes
or use flash photography
4) If you have a beach house in a turtle
nesting area, turn out or turn down the
outside lights on the oceanside during
the nesting and hatching seasons.
Call (910) 328-1000 to report nesting

the internships are not limited to the

them to hands-on experience.
The visiting season lasts from
June and runs through August. For
