Preservation Issues Roundtables Planned
The Preservation Issues Committee is planning three roundtable discussions this
spring for Preservation Dallas members and guests. The first roundtable, sched-
uled for March 21, entitled "Successfully Using Historic Preservation in Affordable
Neighborhoods," will be facilitated by State Representative Terri Hodge (D-100)
The discussion will center around the effect of designation on neighborhoods that are
not undergoing revitalization.
Following on April 25, the second roundtable focuses on appropriate design of new
construction in historic districts. The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the
Treatment of Historic Properties guides new design to be distinct from the historic
context, yet the opposite approach is more common. The third roundtable, on May
23, will explore the advantages and disadvantages of preservation guidelines that
prescribe restoration over evolution (should a city or neighborhood be able to evolve
over time or is maintaining the historic period in perpetuity more desirable?).The roundtables will be held inI
