200 EAST FOURTH ST. / BOX 450 / SWEETWATER, TEXAS 79556 / 915-236-6313Welcome:
The people of Sweetwater, Texas were honored in 1972 to host the
30th reunion of the WASP program. Now, in 1986, it is my pleasure,
as the Mayor of Sweetwater, to welcome the Women Air Service Pilots
and their friends home again.
This year, during our Sesquicentennial celebration of Texas we
acknowledge the vitality of the WASP era, as what is perhaps
Sweetwater's greatest role in Texas history. From 1942 to 1945,
close to two-thousand women pilots left their civilian lives to
converge on the only all-female military base in American history;
Avenger Field. It was here that WASP endured the rigors of Army
training and began ferrying all types of aircraft to embarking
points. The City of Sweetwater recognizes these brave women for
their accomplishments, and will never forget the determination,
courage, and honor that was required of them to obtain those goals.
On the Women Air Service Pilots return to Sweetwater, we greet
four-hundred veterans home to reminisce andperhaps relive parts
of this grand experiment. Truly, the WASP organization holds a
special breed of women.
Sweetwater salutes you!Sincerest Wishes,
/Rick Rhodes
Mayor
