GRAHAM DAILY
SATURDAY. MAY 17. 1941.
Program Seeks More Vegetables Jo Can
to expand the pfbduc-1 ’lions from their AAA paymei
sa (or canning by 5 per cause of increases In ' aireki
A program to expar
tion of tomatoes tor cai
cent to met probable demands for
canned tomatoes under the Lend
Lease Act, and for distribution by
the American Red Cross ss well as
for school hmch, relief and other
purposes, was announced today by
Secretary of Agriculture Claud R.
Wickard. The need for immediate
actidn to secure the necessary acre
age to produce an extra 15,000,000
eases of canned tomatoes was em-
phasized, as planting must be made
during the next few weeks in order
to insure the required supply. Much
smaller quantities of pess, corn, and
snap beans may also be purchased
from time to time, but no advance
purchases at this time are contem-
bl»t«.' ** — ----* —
Present prospects indicate that the
increase sought in canned vegetables
prill be sufficient to meet anticipated
needs up to June 30, 1942. To meet
current requirements, the Federal
Surplus Commodities Corporation will
bids from canners foi
ments be-
ges of
these vegetables for canning.
Further purchase of fresh toma-
toes with subsequent processing will
also be made if it becomes necessary
to insure a fair price tq supplies
on the southern and western states
during the (all of 1941 in-po-far as
is required.
The grades of canned vegetables
contemplated to be bought are Grades
B and C, so as not to absorb too large
a proportion of any single grade.
Federt! inspection as to grade will
be required.
‘ The' department of agriculture ex-
pects to inform growers over the
entire nation of the need lot the ex-
panded acreage through the Agricul-
tural Adjustment Administration
committee and the Extension Service.

To make it possible for canners to
- take immediate steps to secure the
increase in tomato acreage, the P.S.
C.C. proposed to ask canners to sub-
mit offers at once to deliver canned i
tomatoes after the new pack has
been completed. Through the early
acceptance of such offers, it is ex-
pected that canners will be able to
arrange, finance, and carry out their
increased operations with a minimum
of difficulty. Under the plan, deliv-
ery can be made within 60 days of.
packing, but bids will also provide for
storage after that date where facil-
ities are available.
In order to assure the greater sup-
ply of tomatoes necessary, the F. S.
C. C., in considering bids, will make
allowance for increases of from $2.75 j pretty
to 23.00 per ton over 1940 contract outfit
prices to growers
It is expected that the price in- j and
crease wlH be applicable to theem-|----
tire contracted production of all \
growers who cooperate in furnishing
the increased quantities desired and
who, if requested, increase acreage
jpr fertilization so far as is reason-
able* and practical.

program will not incur any deduc-
