(Continued from Page One)
the State highway winds around
with the river up and down the
mountain heights and the seen- i
ery is beautiful and sublime,
unexcelled in any part of the
nation.
“I have traveled up the Hud-
son River in New York on the
famous River Side Drive; I have
traveled the many loops and
drives in the mountains of Col-
orado ; I have seen the beautiful j
winding roads leading to the fa-
mous Yosemite Falls in Califor- *
nia; but I declare none of them
no more picturesque, no more
attractive, no more inspiring,
than the wonderful road from
Kerrville up the Guadalupe Riv-
er.
“Leaving the river you go up
on to a rolling divide between
1 the Guadalupe and the Llano.
The distance is 25 miles and you
i cross many small streams af-
fording clear running water.
“I never saw as many goats,
sheep and cattle in my life. They
run them altogether—about 250
sheep, 40 cattle and 50 goats to
the 640 acre section.
“Coming in sight of the Llano
River, you behold one of the
most beautiful sights. Looking
down from the heights of the
big divide you see the coming
together of the North and South
Llano Rivers, where is situatec
the beautiful little city of Junc-
tion-claimed to be the best in-
land town in the world. I saw
so much thrift and so many fine
stock and so many good friendly
people that I am not going to
dispute the proposition.
One interesting thing I no-
ticed. That was that there is
just one lone Jew living in Junc-
tion. His name is Joseph. He
appeared to be unafraid altho
away out in the far west. I
thought to myself, if this lone
Jew should try to live by him-
self in certain other parts of
Texas just about now, especial-
ly where some of the big church
es and big preachers live, his
religions would cause him to
vanish some night, never to re-
turn. With the coming of the
morning there would not only
not be any Joseph, but there
wouldn’t be any coat as of old
to tell the tale of a wicked fan-
aticism.
“But he is safe in Junction.
Everybody has their own reli-
gion out there and every body is
welcome to worship God as they
desire.
“Let me suggest that all my
friends who can to just take an
auto trip out to Junction. The
climate and the people are fine
and bully good, you bet. I saw
my first wild turkeys and saw
cotton that had never been
plowed, making a luile to the
acre.
“From Junction. I traveled
up the North Llano River for
40 miles and crossed the stream
about 15 times. It was inter-
esting all the way. Pecan
proves, perhaps the finest in ]
Texas. More sheep and goats. |
“On the way I saw the old;
fort that was once maintained j
in frontier days by the Federal
Government. It was here that
Lieutenant Robert E. Lee used j
to fight the Indians when he j
was a young man.
“Leaving the Llano, you go
up a tug level divide for many
miles on the way to Sonora, the
county seat of Sutton County.
To my great surprise. I found
thousands of aervs of good
M i Mack sandy loam land My
nredtctiim is that thia will some
j day he one of the good cotton
growing sections of the State,
There is no radnuwi in Sutton
County yet ami land suitable for
farming can tie had at from -15
to $25 an acre Here is. In my
opinion, one of the best places
for the man who wants a small
home in Texas. In less than
•even years there will be rail-
road connection and then these
land* will go high. It looked
to me like the cattle and sheep
in Sutton and Schleicher Coun-
ties are just a little larger than
any other stock I have seen in
Texas.
“And the people—they art
jaat the salt of the earth, and
no mi stage." • • • •
