ST. ED’S 6—GRUBBS VOCATIONAL COLLEGE 0
In a game which resembled a mud fight more than an ath-
letic contest, St. Ed’s defeated the heavier team of Grubbs
Vocational College, 6-0. The muddy question was decided
on our field on November 10th. The three days of heavy
rain preceding the fracas proved a huge disadvantage to our
fleet backs and greatly helped the beefy visitors. No real
football was displayed, but the superiority was never in
doubt. The game held no thrills, and consisted chiefly of
line drives although a few passes were used.
With Stuessy, Williams and Walsh carrying the ball and
the entire line making wide openings for them, St. Ed’s ad-
vanced to the two-yard line from where O’Connor pushed
his way over. Play in the first half, as during the entire
game, was mostly in their territory. At three different
times, we brought the ball to within ten yards of the Grubbs
goal line, only to lose the slippery pigskin by fumbles.
The second half was a repetition of the first. The visitors ’
defense, however, showed strength in this period, more so
than in the first part of the game. St. Ed’s used a few passes
in the last quarter, but the soaked and muddy ball was hard
to control with any degree of accuracy.
There were no individual stars for either team, both
elevens working together well under the exceedingly dis-
advantagous conditions. A small crowd from Austin and
th student body witnessed the contest.

ST. ED’S. 14—ALEXANDRIA 6
Following the ball and pouncing on it as soon as it was
fumbled, paved the way for the St. Ed’s warriors to gain a
14 to 6 victory over the heavy Alexandria College team from
Jacksonville. The game was staged at Schwab Field in
San Antonio on Saturday, November 18th. Alexandria holds
claim to the championship of an organized junior college
league, and the outcome of the game was watched with
great interest. St. Ed’s made their two touchdowns in the
first half while Alexandria scored in the last period.
On our first punt of the game, less than two minutes after
the initial whistle, Weatherby, Alexandria’s safety man,
fumbled on his five-yard line, and Durrenberger, our clever
end, was on it. After three unprofitable tries at the line,
Williams circled left end for three yards and the first score.
Captain Jim McAtee added the seventh point by a perfect
place kick.
During the second period one of Niemic’s long spirals was
fumbled and this time “Red” Gannon, our reliable center,
was on the job. And with no one to head him off, he raced
forty yards down the field for our final touchdown. Niemic
place-kicked over the bar for the extra point. The Alexan-
dria offense was very effective against our gang in the first
half. They made two first downs in this period against one
for St. Ed’s and completed seven out of eight passes, all of
which were of the short variety.
In the second half, however, St. Ed’s came back to their
own, and although they did not score while the visitors made
a touchdown, they outplayed the boys from East Texas in
every department of the game. Pass after pass was com-
pleted and we gained constantly on our running plays, only
to lose the ball when within striking distance of the goal.
By a series of short passes over the line Alexandria advanced
the ball to our thirty-yard line from where Hipps scored on
a pass from Bailey.
The St. Ed’s team, though way below standard, played a
strong game. The line fought hard and no long gains were
made through it, The backs played well offensively, but
experienced difficulty in breaking up the none too brilliant
passing combination of their opponents. Johnnie Niemic,
who has been out with injuries all season, showed his wares
for two periods and played well. Paul Smith was the out-
standing defensive star for St. Ed’s while Reynolds, Sprott
and Hipps featured for Alexandria.
