ST. ED’S 12—HOWARD PAYNE 20
Injuries, penalties and bad breaks, after starting like a
house afire, and piling up a 12-point lead, were the chief
causes for St. Ed’s defeat at the hands of Howard Payne,
one of the strongest teams in the state. The final score was
20 to 12, but the eight-point margin does not denote the
closeness of the game. It was played at San Antonio on
November 25. After scoring our first two touchdowns in
the second quarter, we worked the ball to the one-yard mark
from where one of our back carried it to the goal line; but
he was tackled so viciously by two men at the same time,
that the powerful impact drove the ball from his arms and
it was recovered by an opponent. The break instilled into
Howard Payne that spirit which is hard to beat, and though
our team played its best game of the year to date, they could
not stop their opponents, who fought doggedly for every
inch. They had to fight to win.
St. Edward’s took the field with lots of pep and downed
the Howard Payne receiver of the kickoff in his tracks. Two
completed passes, one after it had been hit by a St. Ed’s
man, mixed with running plays, were responsible for three
first downs, but our team steadied and forced Howard Payne
to punt. St. Ed’s kicked back, but when the Yellow jackets
got possession, they advanced down the field on open pass
formations as well as line plays, to the 20-yard line from
where a long pass was grounded behind our goal line for a
touchback. St. Ed’s gained on an exchange of punts which
followed shortly, and the ball was taken to mid-field on two
clever forward passes, from where Ed. Woeber tried a drop-
kick, but it went wide. The Howard Payne safety man
caught the ball on his 5-yard line and “Red” Gannon downed
him in his tracks. The quarter ended with Howard Payne
in possession of the ball.
On the attempt to kick out of danger on the first play of
the second period, the punt was fizzled and went out of
bounds on the 15-yard line. Walsh promptly gained five
yards through center and 0 ’Connor made it first down on the
two-yard line. Stuessy took it over on the next play for
the first score. Goal was missed.
