COTTON PLAN MENACE UNLESS HUMAN ELEMENT
. ', IS CONSIDERED
, The plans now being formulated by the Agricultural Adjust-
ment Administration for retiring fifteen million acres of land
from cotton production next year are seen as a real menace to
Texas and the South in its providing a new social problem of
stupendous proportions. The release of fifteen million acres of
cotton land, the Texas Weekly says, will mean dispensing with
the services of not less than two hundred thousand -tenant farm-
ers, thus placing approximately one million men, women and
Children on the unemployed list. Fully'eighty thousand tenants
Will be displaced in Texas alone, the writer says.
It is tb be regretted that we. cannot start something
that will do somebody .good and nobody harm. With hundreds
of people hungry for bread and ham, we retire wheat land and
reduce hog population. Millions of people are sleeping in auto
mobiles and trucks without decent clothes, window curtains,
tablecloths or mattresses while we whoop it up' to reduce the
surplus cotton nobody is able to buy. Thousands of farmers
cannot meet payments, taxes and upkeep of their land already
in cultivation while thousands of acres of new land is being pre-
pared for irrigation and agricultural production by building huge
government water impounding dams.
We join the Texas Weekly in its protest against starting so;
with the beloved Marie as the re- another. And the p’rade!

Regardless of the future outcome of beer legislation, it is
unfortunate that adequate provision had not been made to clar-

First Lady of the United States Visits Quebec
TMTBS. FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT, wife of the President of the United States, motored unexpectedly and ur*
