More About Fifinella
Marty Wyall, Historian, reports that an original edition of Roald
Dahl's story 'The Gremlins", published in 1943 by Random
House and illustrated by Walt Disney, is a part of memorabilia
now in the Office of the Historian. A note on the fly leaf states
that the R.A.F. Benevolent Fund will receive the author's share
of the proceeds from the sale of the book. It tells the story of
the Gremlins, Fifinellas, and Widgets (baby gremlins). This
book was given to Marty during the WASP Reunion at
Sweetwater in 1986 by the owner, Hugh Davidson of Abilene,
Texas. He explained that it was his favorite book as a child,
and he cherished it enough to present it to the WASP of WWII
to be added to the archives.
PRESIDENT PAT PATEMAN represented the WASP at an all-
women veterans luncheon November 11, 1990, sponsored by
the Marine Women Veterans of Newport Beach. Women
veterans of the Navy, Army and Coast Guard also attended.DORA STROTHER was honored at the 1990 Gathering of
Eagles which was held at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. She is one
of twenty pilots on the 1990 Aviator List which includes Robert
L. Scott, Chuck Yeager and Buzz Aldrin, among others, and is
listed as pilot of the B-29 Superfortress. A letter from President
Bush was addressed to the 1990 Class in which he said, 'The
Gathering of Eagles" is a wonderful opportunity to learn from
others who have served in tumultuous and uncertain times in
the past. These pioneers of aviation and aerospace have a
common bond shared by all great men and women."
*ARBARA LAZARSKY was one of the honored guests at the
National Aviation Club Sixth Annual Luncheon honoring Women
In Aviation on October 18, 1990, held in Crystal City, Virginia.

Last year Pat was invited to participate in an intensive five-day
briefing with the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference. Here is
her day-by-day account.
Monday 6:30 a.m. We were called and spent eight hours being
briefed in the Pentagon by the heads of the four branches of
service, Dick Cheney and various deputies, plus General Colin
Powell himself. Very impressive. We were briefed in the war
rooms (didn't know there were such things) in the Pentagon.
Tuesday 4:30 a.m. A KC-10 tanker flew us from Andrews AFB
in D.C. to Edwards AFB, CA. We refueled two B-52s enroute.
An F-117 was flown into Edwards for us. Also saw the B-2 and
we were briefed in the Test Pilot Training School.
Wednesday 5:00 a.m. We were flown by the Navy to San
Diego where we were taken by helicopter to watch a
demonstration of an LCOC, which goes 60 mph carrying tanks
and troops to the beach! We were then taken out further to the
Saratoga which was underway, and we watched flight
operations. Wow, do the pilots get a jolt in carrier landings!
Thursday 4:30 a.m. The Marines flew us to Twnety-Nine Palms,
CA in the DESERT! We were briefed by General Hopkins who
is now in Saudi Arabia with his desert-trained Marines. We then
went by helicopter to the desert training area where we donned
helmets and flak jackets. We fired all sorts of weapons, drove
tanks, personnel carriers that zip over the desert at 90 mph,
fired cannons, watched a firing demonstration of cannons,
F-18s, Harriers, bomb drops, and Cobras firing missiles. As
one man said, "I think we have just witnessed about $1,000,000
of our tax money go up in flames." We ate with the troops and
left having a damn good idea of desert warfare.
Friday 5:00 a.m. The Air Force flew us to Ft. Lewis, just south
of Seattle. Huge! We flew simulators and fired TOW missile
simulators. We fought battles on computers, were flown all over
this huge base in helicopters, watched a demonstration by
Rangers, and were briefed by different special forces. A
fantastic experience!
TWA flight which was hi-jacked by terrorists several years ago,
and her conduct through that life-threatening experience was
nothing less than heroic.
BETTY JANE WILLIAMS received a letter from Kathryn Kip
Requardt, daughter of Kathryn K. Humphreys Requardt of class
44-2, asking where she could get information about her
mother's service. She wrote that she had seen the display of
WASP pictures, including some of her mother, at the Air
Transport Command Restaurant at the airport in Newcastle,
Delaware, and she realized that she knew very little about her
mother as a WASP. Her mother had never talked much about
her experience. Kathryn's mother died in 1980 and she would
like to know where she can find out about her mother's service
as a WASP. Any information from anyone who knew her would
be greatly appreciated. Please write to: Kathryn Kip Requardt,
Bachelors Point, P.O. Box 298, Oxford, MD 21654.
