Ciiicaoo III Sept 22 The ehorlft
has appointed extra deputies who have
been assigned to the various distilleries
At Harveys larm tlicy will bo under tho
state veterinarian and will be paid by tho
state It will bo thtlr duty to sec that
none ot tho cattlo get away or aro re-
moved and that they are not permitted to
come In contact with any other cattlo
The authorities believe that tho disease
can be confined within the prosont limits
regardless of bow severe It may prove
A wellknown stock expert said last
evening Tlio plaguo first made Its ap-
pearance In that neighborhood about two
years ego when It was brought by somo
Jersey cattle from a herd oolonglng to
Mr Dye ol Troy Ohio It was said that
the cattlo originally came from near Bal-
timore Md t > ut that was denied The
only thing certain about the matter
Is that tbo cattle came from some of the
seaboard states where the disease existed
lor somo years These dlicascd cattle
wtre sold ot pabllo auction at Virginia
City In this state and the Inlcctlon made
Its appearance afterwards first In Geneva
In Clarks herd and after that at Elm-
hurst In Boyds herd Efforts were made
at that time to stamp out the dlseaso by
quarantine and rigorous measures but
tbo cattle dealers particularly the stock-
yard men made seen a hullaby and cry
that It was not a contagious dlseaso
that the attempt to extir-
pate the Infection was merely
a scare gotten up for selfish purposes
that It was Impossible to carry out the
proposed measures and tbo quarantine
was relaxed I am satisfied that It there
bad been no outcry we should not have
been troubled with the present outbreak
Unless a fresh infectlou has been Im-
ported I think that ctery case of pleuro
pneumonia now Is directly traceable to
the Klmhurstand Geneva herds
Tno great trouble with this disease Is
Its insidious naturo and the length of
time that the germs require for
Incubation I can comparo It to
nothing bat slow fire smouldering
unseen but still consuming aud suddenly
bursting out In a grrat conflagration
Cattle may be so lightly affected as to
escape notice and thoy may even appar-
ently recover but tboy will always carry
about them tbo germs ot the disease It
has been found that the only safe way Is
to kill every animal that has been exposed
to tho disease and to buru to tho ground
every building which has sheltered them
Tbo dUease appears to resemble tuber-
culosis but autopsy reveals a marked
difference There are no tuber-
cles on tho lung In pleuro
pneumonia Tho pleuro and the lungs
are grown together and tho lungs are
hard and can be cut in slices with a knife
Healthy lungs will wolgh about fifty
pounds but tho lungs qi a cow having
pleuropneumonia havo been known to
weigh over one hundred and thirty pounds
Iuocculatlon has been tried but It Is not
satisfactory Tho dlseaso caunot bo
cured A portion of tho luugs once at-
tacked by pleuropneumonia Is as hope-
lessly gono as a finger cut off
Tbo plague Is now largely confined to
the dairy stables It a dairymen finds a
cow ailing ho sends her to tho stables and
brings In another trom tho coUntry thus
keeping the flame ot tho dlseaso burning
and porhnps regularly having two or
thrco sick beasts lu the stablo all tho
time In one sense this lo less danger-
ous than if tho Infection wcro to break-
out In Uio stockyard but In another It is
more dangerous In that It enhances tho
dltllculty ot ascertaining tho oxlstcnco ot
tho plague and starts now center of In-
fection
Chigaoo III Sept 22 Chairman
rcarsonottbellllnolsLlvo Stock commis-
sion and Mr McChesnoy also a member
ottho commission held a consultation
today with a numbor of olorlnarlans In
this city Among tho experts present
were Dr Casowcll veterinarian for Illi-
nois and his associates Doctors Hughes
and Murpby ot Chicago From
abroad wcro Dr Salmon of tho
United States board Dr Alexander
Murray ot Detroit formerly of tho
Michigan Llvo Stock ooard and Dr At
klnson of Milwaukee veterinarian for
Wisconsin Tho commission proceeded
to tho Ihanlx distillery sheds followed
by tho veterinarians wnoro postmortem
examinations wore made and Dr Sal-
mon ajd tho state exports unanimously
agreed that the dlsoaso was contagious
pleuropneumonia
Concerning u considerable movemont of
cattlo Into this particular locality from
tho etovk yards to utilize tho feed from
these dlstlllerlos It can not be ascer-
tained that then had been any Toturn
movement WIioj cattlo at the distiller-
ies aro fat It is uudurstood they aro con
consigned to a slaughter house In
Bridgeport this sido ol tho stock yard
and It can not bo ascertained
that any had recently boon slaughtoicd
olsowhere If thcro had been any ship-
ments ot the slopled cattle they must
Inevitably hao been made east and not
west so it Is not likely that tho dlsoaso
can have spread from this center lu the
past and as to the futuro everything wilt
bo In close quarantine and every
precaution taken to guard tho cattle
passing through this city trom the possi-
bility of exposure Tho Infected locality
Is In the extreme northwestern portion ot
tho city from six to ten ralles from tho
stockyaws which aro outside the south-
ern limits ot the city and communi-
cation betwoon tho two through
tho olty streets and blocks Is not
convenient aud can never bo accidental
Statu and todoral authorities aro co-
operating In the matter and thoro seems
no raoro occasion for interruption ot cattlo
movement through tho ordinary channels
ot trade hero than It the outbreak had oc
