THE GAZETTE FORT WORTH TEXAS SATURDAY OCTOBER 9
GOING FOR THE G4DTTK
Mr Fnnnlnff lias n Faw WordetoSat About
tlta Inpar
FohTWoitTllTEX Oct 7Had
To the Editor of tho Gatctto
Your definition of monopoly tho un-
answerable argument you mako In do
fenso of The Gazkttk and Its principles
will no doubt havo n good effect Marty
who havo been In doubt aro willing to
glvo you credit for tho ldoia advanced
1 am willing to revlso my opinion and
gladly welcome you to the ranks of our
labor organizations
I have always contended that we needed
tho Influence and power of Tint Gazkttk
In our battlo against monopoly
Whether It bo of the tariff of corporate
power or of paternalism which shall bo
tho entering wedgo to governmental
socialism in which man vainly hopes to
enforce what God tailed to accomplish
the equalization of tho nature the char-
acter tho disposition and tho aspirations
of mankind
I havo always felt proud that Thk Ga
zkttk as a newspaper had no superior
In the Southwest It Is truo that m a
party organ you havo mado a miser
ablo failure Will you confess that also
I can truthfully and conscientiously say
that It Is through no fault of Tin Ga
zicttb as a newspaper that over fivo
clghths of the voters of Tarrnnt county
are an opposing party as against tuo men
whom Tun Gazuttk so ardently ear-
nestly and unfortunately supports for po-
sitions of honor trust aud emolument
It all reforms spring from tho people
and if the people aro determined to mako
a change Tub Gazrttk to tho contrary
notwithstanding why will you thwart
them Is it because you love party moreor
the people less you aro willing to blind
your oyes and your honest opinions to be-
come tho paid servant of men who would
mln This Gazisttb and you and all of us
for power aud ofllce
Am I to answer The Gazkttk as a
newspaper or as tho organ of the Demo-
cratic party If I am to answer It as n
newspaper I most candidly confess that
your present position In opposition to tho
people will bring about tho anarchy you
speak of as so disastrous to our financial
social religious and political standing as
a community which can only end In dis-
integration and ruin
When Tiik Gazkttk was a nowspapor
tho people all loved it Tbey woro proud
of Its success arid morcllcss to Its rivals
When the News came from Galveston to
hold tho field for all time wo
just simply sat down on it
for the simple reason that It
represented monopoly When Thk Ga
zkttk was tho organ of tho people tho
people were glad and satisfied with tho
ruling powers but when tho people
wanted a change Thk Gazkttk scorned
tho people and tho people sat down on
Tmc Gazkttk If Thk Gazkttk wishes
to control the people It must not dictate
to them
Tiik Gazkttk knows perfectly well that
all labor organizations are uniting them-
selves for tho purpose of controlling tho
leglslayon of the country Tint Gazkttk
knows vary well that these labor organi-
zations can be moulded to bring about a
better form of government than wo pos-
sess at present by properly educating
their minds np to senso of their duties as
citizens When Tiik Gazkttk presumes
to tell these labor organizations that they
are only the dupes of demagogues and de-
signing politicians Tiik Gazkttk simply
makes a mistake and loses not only the
respect of these organizations but also
earns their contempt forlts presumption
If Tiik Gazkttk cannot control and
manage the people In tho narrow restricted
bounds of partylstn let it minglo with
the people to the eternal profit of princi-
ple
I am at a loss to know why you called
upon ine unless you expected me to con-
fess that I too was a demagoguo and a
false teacher Your reporter did me an
Injustice I never stated Thk Gazkttk
to be a monopolistic sheet I rather as-
sisted In an explanation of tho harmful re-
sults that would arlso tromla monopoly
such as you pointed out Your reporters
and country correspondents all vlo with
each other to bring Into disrepute all the
leaders of tho labor movement and all tho
efforts of tho labor party
When a man joins theso labor
organizations he loses his identity
to a great extent In politics Ho can re-
main true to his original party It he so
desires or ho can adopt the Independent
method it he thinks it the wisest courso
Wo In this county adopted the independ
ont method to satisfy a longfelt deslro to
select our county officials from the
farmers and producing classes Tim Ga
zkttk arrayed itself against us as a
Peoples party and hence all tho potty
jealousies engendered which I hopo will
end harmoniously In tho November elec-
tion Wo deslro to bo treated with re
spect We promiso on our part that
faithful observance and enforce
mont of tho law which Tim
Gazkttk seems to predicate
that we aro unable or unnllllng to pro-
mote There Is no doubt of tho success
of our local ticket Wo desire harmony
and good feeling We desire that the
citizens of whatever shade of politics
will mingle together for tho welfaro of
our city state and county to the end that
thero may be no moro bad feeling to
promoto trade encourago labor build up
our city and county and givo satisfaction
and guarantee to all classes alike the law
and order for which Thk Gazkttk is so
earnestly and honestly striving

GORDON
The Outlook for Cnttle KnconrnglnE An
ImproTement In llualness
From oar Traveling Correspondent
Gordon Tbx Oct 7 A fine rain vis
lted this section last Sunday and the
effect of Its presence is already seen in
the impetus given to vegetation Grass
Is coming up fast and even tho forest
trees havo taken on a fresher hue of
green Should the weather continue any
thing like favorablo for ft few weeks
longer cattle will begin tho winter in a-
very good condition while thero will be a
sufficiency of grass to carry them through
tho winter Jn their present condition
Business is better now than It has been
fqr months past and cotton Is beginning
to come in which will account for the In-
crease of business Crops are exceed
lngly short in this vicinity this season
Indeed there was a total failure of grain
crops and as a consequence there will ho
soma people to whom tho future will have
but little to promise until another crop
can be made Still notwithstanding the
oxccsslvo drounht there is nothing llko
tho suffering cither present or prospect-
ive that certain papers and selfcon
stitutcd beggars who havo gono North
would havo tho world to believe exists In
this country True there are some peo-
ple who are needy just as would bo tho
case anywhero should a tlrougnt occur
but tho great bulk of those who would
havo suffered had they remained hero have
gono away
This is very productive land around
this vicinity and In an ordinary season
will bloom with all tho good things com-
mon to this country So much Is this the
case that whllo tho drought tho present
year has been a severe ono It does not
deter men who aro experienced farmers
from investing In lands and building
homes for themselves A party arc here
now to buy lands and as they came with
means to back them they think thoy can
mako a success Kansas really never
made a success until the people had
learned to tako advantago of tho lessons
taught by her grasshopper scourges So
will Western Texas farmers learn toprotlt
by the o dronghts and thou will come
peace and plenty
Tho discovery of a rein of real twenty
seven inches thick and entirely trco from
the objections hitherto mado to thd coal
found in this vicinity makos the average
Gordonlto feel like tho hand of fate would
still have something In rcservo for tho
town of tholr hopes and desires The
coal Is of the samo character as that
found near Decatur In Wlso County only
it is considerably heavier and burns
longor and gives moro heat It is ru-
mored that the Texas Pacific railway
has made a proposition to tho owner of
the land looking toward raining and using
the coal
