HOOVER , DECLARES HE WILL
VETO ANY NEW SOLDIERS
BONUS BILL
WASHINGTON, March 29.—Presi-
dent Hoover served emphatic notice
upon congress today that a veto awaits
at the white house for any new sol-
diers bonus legislation that might be
passed and delivered there.
Speaking to newspapermen gather-
ed in his private office the president
declared he was “absolutely opposed
to any such legislation.” The $2,000,-
000,000 expenditure necessary to pay
the balance on veterans’ ■ compensa-
tion certificates, he asserted, would
preclude any balancing of the budget.
Immediately, opposition was arous-
ed on capitol hill. Representative
Connery of Massachusetts, said he
would use every power within his
means to push through the house one
of the 16 bills already introduced to
provide additional payment upon ad-
justed compensation certificates.
Connery declared that if a bonus
bill is not placed before the house he
would “fight it out the petition way,”
obtaining 145 names upon a request to
bring up the question. The demo-
cratic controlled ways and means
committee has placed the bonus first
on its order of business following dis-
posal of the troublesome tax question.
The president's lashing statement
today apparently was prompted by
growing agitation within the house.
Republican leaders have informed
him that sentiment among a major-
ity appears to favor new bonus leg-
islation.
The chief executive’s face was stern
as he arose from his desk at the start
of his press conference. Even the
informal polls on this subject already
conducted within the house, he said,
have “created apprehension In the
country.”
“Such action,” he continued, “would
undo every effort that is being made
to reduce government expnditures and
balance the budget. The first duty
of every citizen of the United States
is to build up and sustain the credit
of the United States government. Such
an action would irretrievably under-
mine it.”
BOY SCOUT DOINGS
Minor Huffman, from the Reginal
boy scout office in Dallas has spent
the last two weeks in the Comanche
Trail Council assisting the various
towns in setting up their community
committee.
The new council is a partnership of
towns cooperating to make possible
the carrying on and the promotion of
the boy scout movement in the fol-
lowing counties: Mills, Erath, Lam-
pasas, Stephens, Eastland, San Saba,
Comanche and Brown.
A program that will improve the
scout leadership and the Troop activ-
ities has been outlined. It will in-
clude the training of leaders, advance-
ment of scouts, and the promotion of
outdoor activities.
The local scout program is under
the leadership of Eric Matthews, War-
ren Taliaferro and Floyd Asher.

JUNIOR PIERIAN CLUB
The Junior Pierian club met at the
home of Olivia Scarborough, Tues-
day, March 29.
The meeting was opened by the
president, Bess Northington. There
was an unusually long business ses-
sion in which the committee that was
appointed to select a present for the
library in the new city hall, showed
the club the beautiful colonial tap-
estry, which they had chosen. In ad-
dition to' this tapestry, twenty inter-
esting books were donated to the li-
brary.
Plans were made for the entertain-
ment for the Senior Pierian club at
the home of Eva Harris on April 12.
Five new members were voted into
the club, their entrance will be made
at the first meeting in September.
These girls were Ellen May Bailey,
Eva Louise Young, Kathryn Harkey,
Mary Frances Casbeei'* and Fay Scar-
borough.
Mr. Donnell has kindly agreed to
give the club a benefit show April 6th
and 7th. Following the business ses-
sion Olivia Scarborough led a very
interesting lesson on. the meaning of
Easter. The club adjourned and re-
freshments of ice cream and cake were
served to all present.—Reporter.

THE REVIVAL STARTS FRIDAY
The Christians of Lampasas are
making an effort to start a revival
next Friday night, April 1, 7:45 p. m.
with Bro. A. C. Nance of Lometa,
evangelist for the Church of Christ
doing the preaching. Bro. Nance

authority of Christ given in Matt. 28:
16-20 and followed by the Apostles in
Acts 2:1-47; 19:17-20. This revival
meeting is for all men. It does not
matter your station in life. God is
able to save all who will obey Him.
Let every Christian near Lampasas
come to these services and bring your
neighbors, friends and strangers will
find a welcome. Bring your Bibles
and note books. Be like the people of
Berea in Acts 17:10-11. Three ser-
vices on Lord’s day.—Reporter.

CONGRATULATES LADIES
OF LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
Eastland, Texas, March 28, 1932.
Mrs. W. F. Mace,
Lampasas, Texas.
Dear Mrs. Mace:
I have just learned that your new
city hall is nearing completion, and
that the Lampasas Public Library will
occupy well appointed quarters in it.
Permit me, through you, to congrat-
ulate the ladies of the Library Asso-
ciation upon this achievement.
I well remember that, when I was
Pincipal of your high school, more
than twenty years ago, your organi-
zation', through its work in fostering
a public library, made a distinct con-
tribution to the cultural life of the
city. With this new advancement this
influence should be even more potent.
Congratulations and best wishes.
Sincerely,
J. E. Hickman.
That useful organization, the boy
scouts, is moving the books from the
old library to their new quarters at
the city hall. These boys know how
to do things.
