The Katy General Ofllces
It is probable that the new organization
of the Missouri Kansas and Texas will be
perfected very shortly Rumor has it that
J Waldo will be general manager and H
P Hughes and John A Smith will be made
general passenger and general freight
agents respectively That this runior is
correct is borne out by the fact that it is
not the policy of the Katy to change its
heads of departments Aside from the
creation of the office of general manager
the personnel of the traffic and operating
departments will be unchanged The gen-
eral offices for Texas will in all probability
be located at Denison as the companys
principal shops and headquarters are there
now and it offers the best advantage for
operating the lines in the state that can be
found anywhere on its lines Nothing defi-
nite is known however regarding the com
panys intentions all being as yet only sur-
mise but this will probably be the arrange-
ment
VisHZnjr Kallroaders
Among the visiting railroad men in the
city last night were Walter G Wilkinscity
passenger and ticket agent of the Santa Ke
at Dallas and J K Leith traveling freight
agent of the same line Mr u ilkins is
probably one of the shrewdest passenger
men in the state He was for ten or twelve
years city passenger and ticket agent of the
Misso iri Pacific at St Joseph and prior
to that time was in the service of the Bur-
lington and at the union depot He was
virtually raised in a ticket office Always
jovial and urbane he had the passenger
business in that city virtually under his
control at least as far as St Louis and the
Kast were concerned He was consido ed
a valuable man in that territory and The
Gazette is pleased to see that he is prov
ing equally as popular with Texaus Walt
thinks there is no country just like Texas
and thinks it is just the place for a young
man to work up While his visit to the
Panther City was necessarily a flying one
ie was very favorably impressed with tho
city and its location

IS The conference here developed the fact
that Refugio and Goliad counties have
raised their bonus for the Corpus Christi
and South America railway and that Vic-
toria county has less than onethird of its
portion to raise The whole bonus will be
raised and the survey is expected to be
made this fall
A Tariff on Compressed Cotton
Special to the Gazette
Austin Tkx Sept IS The railway
commission will tomorrow promulgate a
tariff on compressed cotton which will be
1U cents a hundred less thao the tariff now
in operation This is done to meet the new
move by the roads which are now making
the shippers pay for compressing whereas
before the roads stood the cost themselves
This new tariff will not go into effect for
twenty days In talking about it today
Judge Reagan manifested a good deal of
displeasure at what he holds to be the ex-
tremely bad faitli shown by the railway-
men in this matter of the cotlon rates It
is the first overt act of bad faith on the
part of the roads and has had a decidedly
unwholesome effect on the commission It
takes no prophet to predict that the roads
will make mighty little by it
Railway Conductors
Special to the Gazette
Tayiob Williamson Couxtt Tex
efiept IS Maj B S Wathen of Dallas who
is so noted for his civil engineering qualifi-
cations left here yesterday accompanied by
proper escort He will go over the line from
here via Beaukiss Lexington Bryan
Madisonville to Trinity The directors of
the Tylor Bryan and Trinity railroad say
the road will soon be built and they will
pusli same as soon as Maj Wathen reports
as it is well conceded that the route will be
short and low grade
The Order of Conductors on thj Interna-
tional and Great Northern railroad have
signed an agreement between themselves
which has the approval of the railroad com-
pany as to line and manner of promotion s
By tho change some freight conductors are
educed to chaingaugs and others have to
ply the Armstrong brake but the boys
say tho matter will soon regulate itself
The Sauta Felilo Grande Deal
Special to the Gazette
New Yoke Sept IS It was admitted
yesterday that there would be closer rela
tions between the Atchison and Denver and
Rio Grande systems but it will be simply a
traffic arrangement The Atchison will
neither buy nor lease the Denver and Rio
larde The arrangement will result in
aomy of operation by both roads It is also
said the Atchison and the Missouri Pacific
arc workin more harmonieusly and that
many ints of friction have been removed
There has long been an agreement known
as th < r Colorado pool anions toe roads pass-
ing through thafstaW the aim of which is
to keep rates on a stable basis and prevent
demoralization This accounts for the
higher ratcson the mountain roads than
prevail elsewhere in tho West It is not
thought likely that tho Atchison and the
Denver and Kio Grande will try to make
things unpleasant for the Union Pacific as
it would result in the destruction of the
Colorado pool and the road3 would be heavy
losers
Hay Bates
Special to tho Gazette
Paris Lamar County TEx Sept 18
Capt T J Berry of Brookstcn one of the
largest hay raisers if not the largest in the
state cant figuie out much benefit to his
business from commisiion rates Capt
Bcrrj says
Tnereare about one thousand carloads
of corn and hay shipped annually from La-
mar county Last week the freight on a
car of hay to Galveston or San
Antonio was j36 ard S35 respect-
ively This week it is 50 Last week
the rate to Huntsvillo vasWj this week
it is J4S It may be contended that the rate
is lower to Bowie Cass and Marion counties
than before but not more than one car in
fifty finds a market in these counties The
largest markets are in Southeistern South-
ern Southwestern and Western Texas to
all of which the rates have been riised
from 20 to 40 per cent
The principal corn oats and hay ex-
porting counties are Lamar Fannin Hunt
Kaufman Van Zandt Dallas Ells Collin
Grayson Denton Johnson Hul McLen-
nan Tarrant Bell and Williamson The
rates from Lamar are from 10 to 40
per cent higher than the counties
named which arc her competitors the
rates from Lamar being about the sam as
those from the Indian Territory and but
little lower than Kansas rates In fact
Lamar county is hurt on her cotton lates as
bad Last year the compressed cotton rate
was 70 cents to Galveston this year it is
7ii cents and to all other points the rates
are raised from 3 to 0 cents per 100 pounds
Of course all this increased cost of trans-
portation comes out of the producer
A Strike Probable
Gainesville Tex Sept IS There is
probability of a general strike on the Santa
Fe railway on account of tho suspension of
Conductor Cannon and a brakeman His
train was run into at Haslet a few days ago
by another train and an investigation
showed that he was not at fault His ap-
peal for reinstatement was rejected and the
case taken to Galveston and is now referred
to President Manvel for action
If conductor and crew are not reinstated
with full pay according to the agreement
made a year ago a strike will be ordered
by the Santa Fe confederation composed
of employes of the road which would em-
barrass the road very much
Vigorous Protests
St Louis Mo Sept Is The Mer-
chants Bridge and Terminal railway com-
pany has made a material reduction in the
cost of freight train transfer across the
river here The rate established on gen-
eral merchandise is 2 cents per 100 pounds
on coal coke pig iron and similar freight 1
cent per 100 pounds and on sugar salt
agricultural implements etc 1J < cents per
100 pounds The reductions are from 20 to
K Per oont lower than those charged by
the older or Eads bridge company
Vigorous protests are being made against
the removal of the headquarters of the
Missouri Kansas and Texas railway from
Sedalia Mo to Parsons Kan The Mer-
chants Exchange of this city the governor
of the state and other prominent men in
Missouri have sent telegrams to the execu-
tive committeoof the company asking them
to suspend the order for the removal and
citizens of Sedalia have gone so far in the
matter as to obtain a temporary injunction
against the railroad company

Tennyson Barber Talks
One of the most communicative among
Lord Tennysons neighbors is the village
barber who like most of his kind adapts
himself to many trades and callings This
tonsorial artist is also il demand at enter-
tainments for the display of his talent as a
conjurer On a certain occasion he was
invited to give an exhibition before Tenny-
son and a small party of guests and he
tells with supreme satisfaction how ho
puzzled the great poet by one of his feats
of prestidigitation It seems that he
counted out ten shillings into Lord Ten
nysons hand telling him to hold them
tightly But a few minutes afterward
when he required the money again there
were only eight shillings The look of
astonishment on his lordships face was
indescribable while the laughter of the
other guests at the situation was unmis-
takably hearty In this hilarity it is need-
less to say tha poet most good teinperedly
joined
With the license usually claimed by such
performers the amateur professor of
legerdemain said I dont doubt yer hon-
esty my lord but I gave you ten shillings
I will now try her ladyship with the re-
sult of course that he found more than he
wanted At the conclusion of the enter-
tainment Lord Tennyson expressed his
pleasure at the exhibition and did so as
the delighted barber tells his friends ic
these terms Your feats were very clever
Mr and it is a great credit to tho vil-
lage that it can boast of such talent
