ed the Deaf Mutes* Association

the correspondent of the News
says:
“The association was entertain-
ed In a banquet of 100 covers at
the Metropole Hotel. Dr. George
A. Brooks of Austin, the presi-
dent of the association, praslded
as toastmaster, sssieted by Miss
Inet Lacy, a 12-year-old little
lady of Austin, who is not s mute,
but understands and is an no-
eomplished expert in the sign
language, in cases where the
addresses were spoken Mlse Lacy
interpreted the words to the del-
egates and showsd a marvelous
faculty of eomprshension, coup-
led with the ability to convey
with her pretty gesticulations the
meaning of the sentences she
heard. The following were the
toasts announced in the order
given by Dr. Brooks, the master
of ceremonies: “Reunion,” Her-
bert Gunner; “Our Guests,” Til-
den 8roith; “Fifty Years of

Lightning's Deadly Work.
J. W. A. Langley, bfie of the
best citizens of the county and
one of Sheriff Forsyth’s deputies
wa* killed by lightning last Tues-
day afternoon at his home about
three miles west of Clayton. Phil
Lloyd a negro who was working
in the field with him was also
killed. They were both plowing
and, a shower coming up, they
got under a tree for shelter.
Lightning struck the tree and
both were killed instantly. Mon-
ro* Shaw, Mr. Langley’s uncle,
whoee place is adjoining, heard
the stroke and went at once to
investigate. Mr. Langley gasp-
ed once or twice after he turned
him over. The tree was on firs
and th* negro's clothes ware
burning. The necks of both
were broken. Mr. Langley had
a silver dollar in his pocket and
a hole was melted through it.
Mr. Langley was one of the
most popular citizens of West
Panola. He was a member of
Pine Hill Masonic lodge and~of
Carthage Chapter of Royal Arch
Mason-. His wife is a daughter of
Hon. J. Ras Jones. The funeral
.was held at Pine Hill Wednes-
day undsr the auspices of ths
masons and was largely attended.
The Watchman tenders its most

reaved widow and other rela-
tives.
