Some Important Arrests Made by the
Police Yesterday Morning
Yesterday morning at about 2 oclock
three important arrests were mado by the
officers in the acre The men who were
arrested are all negroes and compose a
gang that has for several months past mado
numerous depredations in different parts of
the city Those arrested are Walter Car-
penter Will Bennett and Louis Clark All
three wero In tho acre last night and about
1 oclock loft and proceeded to the stock-
yards They returned an hour later and
wero rather free with their money and
threw boxes of cigarettes to their friends in
that quarter The officers at once arrested
the trio and lodged them in jaiL Yester-
day Chief Maddox had several interviews
with tho three men who had been placed in-
different cells By a little ingenious pump-
ing it was learned that tho money the
cigarettes and cigars which they had had
the night before had been stolen from Joo
Rankins saloon which they had burglar-
ized upon returning to the stockyards
Onco started they were anxious to tell all
they knew each ono being led to
believe that tho other two had
squealed It was learned where
two watches which hadjboen stolen somo
time before wero pawned besides other
articles stolen by them Tho watches be-
long to John B Longonattl and a man
whoso name could not be learned Tho
amount of which Joo Rankins saloon was
robbwl on Tuesday night was 557 It is
thought other admissions will be gotten
from them which will lead to tho recovery
of other goods which have been stolen
within tho last six months
Tho arrest of the men and tho recovery
of tho watches and other property was a
neat piece of worK on tho part of the offi-
cers

A CHAT WITH COEIXKE
Hon the XJttlo Lady Appears Behind the
Scenes Her Life
During the last act of Carmen last night
a Gazette reportor enjoyed a brief chat
with Corinne during the intervals
when she was not singing
or dancing on the stage
She is ono of the few women who are
really handsomer on a close inspection
than from before tho footlights Speaking
of her Spanish dance she said
Fashions In dances change Just
the same as fashions in dresses
You know tho too dance was
quito the fad for a time Of coursa I tried
that and in Arcadia I introduced a sword
dance Have you seen Arcadia Well
then you know how difficult it is I have
frequently had petitions come back
from tha audience to introduce this
dance in Carmen but of course it
is impossible I admire and am more fond
of the Spanish dance than any other It
has a languageof its own and overy motion
breathes tho languorous poetry of this
nation of poetry Yet it is a hard
task I am obliged to spend
at least an hour each day in practice in or-
der to retain the activeness and suppleness
necessary to a successful and graceful per-
formance For some reason I cannot ex-
plain I have always had a passion for tho
Spanish dunce from the time I first saw it
This Is my first trip through Texas for
a number of years and I have been sur-
prised at tho cordial reception given mo
everywhere and the fact that everybody
seem to know me Texas audiences
I think aro the most sympa-
thetic I have met anywhere They
seem to realize that I am striving hard to
win their approval and approbation I
do hopo I have pleased all that big audience
out there they seem to have thoroughly ap-
preciated my work
At this point she heard her cue and an
instant later was gracefully poised on tho
table in the circus scene
LITTLE CORIXSES LIFE STORT
Tho coming of so celebrated an artisto as
Corinne to our city can not be passed by
without giving a brief sketch of the charm-
ing ltttlo lady She is the daughter of Mrs
Jennie Kimball and as a child was con-
sidered ono of the brightest in tho theatri-
cal profession Her first appearanca was
in Berlin in 1870 and took
the first prize at a show hold for tho benefit
of one of the charitable institutions of that
city She was there cast as Buttercup in
the original juvenile Pinafore company
and mado a national reputation by her
wonderful interpretation of the character
About this time the Society for Prevention
of Cruelty to Children took her from
the stage in New York city but after
an expensive and closely contested trial
she was returned to her mother a c from
that time has headed one of the leading
operacomique companies of the country
Her tottrs have all been successful and at-
tended with tho greatest social patronage
and distinction Corinos father Henri
DoBriou was a native of France and
served in the French army
as an officer of high rank during the
FrancoGerman war He was of noblo
family and after tho close of the war was
compelled to leave France He camo to
America and settled in Bostonwhero he met
Miss Jennie Kimball a celebrated vocalist
and comedienne then playing in the Boston
theater whom ho married in 1872 In 1873
Corinne was born and her mother retired
from tho stage Iu 187S DeBrion re
moved to New Orleans where his
scholarly attainments and polished man-
ners won for him a largo circle of
friends During tho summer of that
year yellow f over broke out in tho city Con-
tracting the disease ho died in September
After his death Mrs Jennie Kimball
De Brion was thrown upon her > own re-
sources and recognizing in her daughter
one of the brightest natural actresses she
placed her beforo the public as a star and
from that time to tho uresent
Little Corinne has won laurels
unequalled by any artisto on the
stage She surprised and captured
her audiences everwhere She has a won-
derful natural musical voice and her fas-
cinating manner charms alt She is an in-
telligent and charming young prima donna
and tho crowning glory of her life is her
wemanly purity unsullied character and
spotless reputation on and off tho stage
Sho is beloved by all who havo ever met
her and tho members of her company aro
unceasing in their praise of the little queen
who leads them to artistic victory through-
out the land
COKINNE IS CARMEN

Conilnj Events
The statementmado in theso columns that
the Kimball opera company presented
the strongest show In the form of bur
lcsquo now on the road and one
that surpassed anything yet seen in Texas
was amply indorsed last night when a
house crowded from pit to domo rang again
and egain with tho plaudits of a delighted
audience Tho Kimball comic burlesquo
opera company is under the personal
management of Mrs Jennie Kimball
mother of Corinne aud this lady has
demonstrated her remarkable mana-
gerial powers in tho manner in which
sho has produced this bur-
lesque on the famous opera of Canrien The
costumes aro rich and elegant the scenery
unusuilly fine and tho entire performance
during its three long acts Is a kaleidoscope
of everchanging scones of beauty
The action of the play is quick the dia-
logue snappy tho musical numbers catchy
and now and the chorus of sixty people re-
markably well trained It is a fitting settiDg
for tho bright handsome little star Corinne
who is yet in her teens Despite this fact
she has already won a namo and fame sec-
ond to no artist in her line Sho is as
bright and sparkling as a sunbeam
combining tho rich dark Italian beiuty
with the grace and manner of an American
Her voice is exquisitely modulated sweet
and clear asabelL Thisalono would bo suffi-
cient to win her success But when she adds
to this her wonderful dancing introducing
the famous Spanish danco with all of the
noted Carmencitas grace and suppleness
but without her coarseness and sug-
gestiveness she goes a step be-
yond the average star and has
established a stylo of work peculiarly
and essentially her own She may have
imitators but there can be only one
Corinne When sho first appeared on the
stago in the West twelve years ago at tho
mature age of six years as Cinderella
she found a warm place in the hearts
of theater goers and this Dlace she has re-
tained Her friends have watched her
progress closely since that time and aro
pleased to sea she has attained
that degree of success her tal-
ents and earnet hard work deserve
Tho most essentially catchy part of her
workjif there beany such is her singing
the Spanish dance in the second act and
her rendition of La Paloma on the man-
dolin
Her support is remarkably clever prom-
inent among hem being Miss Maud Dixon
as Jose whose blondo beauty forms a striking
foil to tho idark beauty of the star Ber-
nard Dyllyn tho baritone presents a strong
burlesque of the Spanish bull fighter and
his song Tho Toreador fcought down

unwilling to let him go Charlie Fostelle

tion of the lovelora maiden is clever

ceptably Misses Glad 5 Vivian and

of sDecial mention beinj very handsome

degree of talent
All through the three acts runs a vein of
bubbling humor that kjeps the audience
constantly in a roar of laughter Carmen
