Chicago III March 3 Itsan ugly
thine to say of a man who occupies a good
social position that he murdered his mother
inlaw for monoy Yet this is what F H
Drenton an aged and wealthy man accused
Dr H M Scudder of having done Scud
der married the adopted daughter
of Drenton whose feeble wife
had a large fortune in her own
right which at the last moment as she lay
in bed only half conscious of what she was
doing as her husband alleges she was in-
duced to sign over to Scudders wife On
February 21 another physician was hastily
summoned to the bed side and found
her expiring with ominous
wounds in the head produced by a fall
from a chair Scudder says As Scudder
was the last man said to have spoken with
her and as ho could not satisfactorily ac-
count for the wounds suspicion fell on him
and so warrants were sworn out for his
arrest by Drenton yesterday The body of
Mrs Drenton was buried at Janesville Wis
Today it was exhumed and two physicians
are making a minute examination Dr
Scudder is a son of the eminent Rev Dr
Scudder The latter appeared before
Judge Scales todav in the county court and
applied to have his son committed to the
detention hospital for examination as to his
sanity Drenton is pioprietor of tho
Spirit of the Times
Mrs Drenton and Mr Scudder had never
been on very good terms with each other
particularly since the marriage last Sep-
tember of tho doctor with Mrs Drentons
adopted daughter His marriage was op-
posed by Mrs Drenton and she was never
reconciled to it She cut her daughter off
with scarcely a shilling in her
will and this is tho reason it is
alleged that Dr Scudder assaulted
his motherinlaw that he might secure
possession of her will change it and then
hasten MrsDrentons death Sunday morn-
ing 21st she seemed unusually well
walked abiat her room read the morning
paper and seemed much improved Hor
breakfast was brought to her Fifteen
minutes g later Mrs Drenton was
heard to scream Everyone in
tho houso rushed up stairs
Hannah Johnson a domestic was the first
to reach the room She has made tho state-
ment on oath that she saw Dr Scudder and
that ho was beating his motherinlaw
over tho head but when others
reached tho room he had ceased and
Mrs Drenton lay upon tho floor face down-
ward bleeding and unconscious Neighbor-
ing physicians were quickly called one of
whom Dr Bassett as ho went up stairs
met Dr Scudder coming down
Subsequently while the newly arrived
physicians were trying to restore the in-
jured woman to consciousness Dr Scudder
caino in Tho nhysicians asked how Mrs
Drenton received her injuries He re-
plied that in a fright slio had fallen
nnd struck her head upon tho furniture
This answer surprised Dr LoaviU since
the room had very little furniture and it
seemed impossible that any one could have
fallen and received cuts of such peculiar ap-
pearance and In such positions Dr Scudder
w as also asked if ho had administered any
medicine to Mrs Drenton Ho replied that
he had given her an injection of oneauar
ter grain of morphine Here said he
is the syringe I used She strpggled so
that I bent tho needle and ho took
from his pocket a syringe whose needle
was bent almost to form a right angle Ho
appeared greatly excited and as Dr Leavitt
was about to leave inquired if it would
not bo well to give Mrs Dren
ton another injection and produced
another syringe Dr Leavitt repliea that
an injection of whisky or brandy would bo
beneficial and Dr Scudder thereupon
made preparations to administer
it But said Dr Leavitt tonight
I do not know what drug
should be administered 1 only know
that Mrs Drenton never revived and died
that afternoon Dr Scudders designs
extended to Mr Drenton it is believed On
February IS whilo visiting Drenton at the
office of the Spirit of the Turf the doctor
told him that ho looked ill and gave
him a dose of medicino which made him
violently ill Ho was scarcely able to reach
home aud became unconscious immediately
after continuing in that conditfon for
thirtysix hours
Tho caso has elicited unusual
and no little excitement owing to tho high
standing of tho families involved and the
secrecy observed as to all details Little
stock is generally taken in tho statement
that tho alleged murdeier is insane

Mr Brann Is an impetuous sneaker with a
wonderful gift of language and a wit as
keen and searching as his logic is relent-
less Tho beauty of his lecture is that it
is impossible to foretell what is comine
He is a continual surprise party ovidently
as much so to himself as hi3
auditors In tho middle of a
beautiful piece of word painting
will come a flash of wit that sets the audi-
ence in a roar or a sarcastic expression
that cuts like a twoedged sword Perhaps
it is his terrible earnestness perchance it
is his personal magnetism Bo
it what it may hb suc-
ceeds At the conclusion of the lecture
last night many including ladies crowded
about him to shake his hand and thank him
for the grand intellectual tieat he had af-
forded them Many were tho requests
that he would remain and deliver an-
other lecture here but as he is billed to
lecture in Waxahachie tonight ho was
compelled to decline Fort Worth will
gladly welcome Iconoclast Brann back at
any time Ho Is both amusing and in-
structive
