Bro. Richards returns from Nicaraaua
I just returned from Diriamba, Nicaragua. I was on
a team of 28 people to spend a week there. Eighteen of
the group was there to do surgery. They were Orthopedic
Surgeons, anesthesiologist and Nurses that performed 29
total knee replacements and 1 ACL repair. They were at
the hospital from 7:15am till 4:30pm Monday - Thursday
and 7:15-12 noon on Friday.
The doctors brought all the equipment and
implants. They were assisted by the only 2 orthopedic
surgeons in that town. Dr. Talbert, Dr. Duncan, and Dr.
Atchinson were able to help the doctors in their proce-
dures and techniques. Also, all the antibiotics and pain
medicine were taken in by the medical team. Once the
patients had their surgery done, they spent 1 night in the
hospital and then were sent home. Wow! These people
are tough.
Here is the unique thing about this hospital.
While the doctors were doing the surgeries, our VBS-
Evangelism team was allowed to minister to the people
in the lobby. We would all get to the hospital around 9:00
am. The ladies and 2 youth would sit on the floor and
start coloring. The Bible story was about Zaccehus. As
they colored the picture, I would tell the story of Jesus
and the wee little man. My translator, Norveer, was very
good. Then, I would share the gospel using the Gospel
Bead bracelet. After I shared the gospel, I would ask if
anyone would like to receive Jesus Christ into their lives.
Many listened and the seed was planted. We did this
Monday thru Friday. Can you see hospitals in America
allowing anything like this? No! I know of 2 older men
that responded - Oscar and Carlos.
One day we went into the children’s ward and
prayed with the children and their parents. I had the
honor of helping Maria and her 10 month old daughter,
Nancy. Maria got her assurance about her salvation. Also,
Ricardo and Maria (different lady) had an 8 year old son
Christopher that nearly lost his middle finger. Through
prayers and the doctors, his finger was saved. This was
a Christian family. They were so glad I prayed for them.
The other team did the something. God really blessed us
as we were used by the Lord to minister to these wonder-
ful people.
In the early afternoon, after a great lunch at
our compound, the VB S/Evangelism team went with
ladies to help feed the children at 3 different locations.
These locations were dirty, dusty, and outside the city.
Tin shacks, cardboard, and tarps were the main material
for their homes. As we pulled in each area, we would be
greeted by smiling, hungry children. They brought bowls,
lids, cups, or whatever would hold the beans and rice.
Close to 100 at each place. The Ministry of Nicaragua
Christian Outreach (N.C.O.) provides lunch 5 days a
week. N.C.O. receives all of its funds from churches and
individuals in America. These ladies (2) usually go in a
taxi that is a 3 seat motorcycle. What a joy it was to see
these children get a hot meal. We did this from 12:30pm-
2:00pm Monday thru Friday.
We would then go to the World of Faith Church
and conduct a 2 hour VBS - Music, recreation, crafts, and
a Bible study. My part of the VBS was to tell the Bible
story. We had around 50 children. There was 25 children
that invited Jesus into their lives. PTL!
On the last day, we bought enough rice and beans
to give all 50 children 8 cups of rice and 8 cups of beans
and a Spanish New Testament Bible.
On Tuesday and Thursday night, I had the
privilege to preach at one of the churches that 1 st Baptist
Church of Minden, LAhad built. Tin roofs, dirt floor, ce-
ment block walls, and plastic chairs. Pastor Oscar and his
church made us feel right at home. I preached messages
to strengthen and help them grow in the Lord. There were
40-50 each night. These people can really sing. No books,
no instruments - just a speaker and CD’s. I was deeply
blessed and touched. Thank you FBC Timpson for your
prayers and financial support. Barbara and I love ya’ll!
PS. The Saturday morning I left, the bus from Bossier
City stopped at the church to pick me up. There were over
20 folks there to pray for me and give me a great send off!
Thanks ya’ll!
