Texas FFA Day at
Texas State Capitol
Austin, Texas - For two days the Texas State Capitol will become a classroom as
more than 800 Texas FFA members and agricultural educators visit Austin on Feb.
21st and 23rd. Students will learn about the state’s legislation process, especially
as it relates to agriculture, at the eighth annual Agricultural Education and Texas
FFA Day at the Capitol, co-hosted by the Vocational Agriculture Teachers Asso-
ciation of Texas and the Texas FFA Association. Since 2010, Texas FFA members
have gathered in Austin to celebrate the organization and advocate for the con-
tinued support of agricultural education. Throughout the day members will meet
with their state legislators, walk the Capitol hallways, and see where history has
been made since 1889. The event provides a unique opportunity for high school
students to learn from various players in the state’s legislative process. Members
and guests enjoyed keynote speeches from Representative DeWayne Burns and
Representative Trent Ashby. “Texas FFA Day at the Capitol provides the opportu-
nity for our state leaders to see the true impact agricultural education and the FFA
has on our state,” said 2016-2017 Texas FFA President, Jake Traylor. The experi-
ence also allows our members the opportunity to witness the legislative process,
and how they can affect change in their own communities.” Timpson High School
FFA students attended this event with their teacher Mrs. Kristin Powers. The stu-
dents (Amanda Yates, Chase Clepper, Kayleigh Scroggins, Connor Timmons and
Macy Jo Hanson) were invited to Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller’s
office to meet one-on-one with Commissioner Miller. While in his office, the
students had the opportunity to attend a press conference. Commissioner Miller’s
office is located at the Stephen F. Austin Building. Students also met with gov-
ernmental liaison Allisa Nolan and other Texas Department of Agriculture staff
members.

USD Groundbreaking Ceremony
Timpson ISD students, staff and board of trustees broke ground for the new con-
struction and improvements in the district made possible by the passage of the
bond election. Superintendent Dr. Mid Johnson said in his remarks: “Today marks
a milestone and a new beginning for our school district. Our vision, with God’s
blessings, is to become the best school district in the State of Texas. Therefore,
we are set to construct a new state of the art Collegiate and Career Center and
event center. The primary construction will consist of a 55,000 square foot facil-
ity that includes a Collegiate Center, Event Center, and Agriculture Science Facil-
ity. The spot on which shovels are placed marks the far end of the new facility
which will span to where the held house is located now or at least partially located
now. In this new facility, students will be offered the chance to gain many col-
lege and career hours as they prepare for a successful career. They will have the
chance to earn associates degrees, college hours, and certificates preparing them
for a greater chance of success in college or for the workplace. To our knowledge,
this type of facility is a new conceptual model that demonstrates a passion to-
ward preparing students for their futures. We are very proud that our community
wishes to invest so freely into the lives of children and we hope this is the begin-
ning of something great that will endure the test of time and make these children’s
lives richer. In other projects across the campus, we are renovating and expanding
the current band hall, building a new softball held and complex, building a new
playground, a new bus barn facility and are updating and renovating other parts
of the entire campus. As we look into the future, let us learn from where we have
been and seek vigorously where we are going. Let us never forget that the path to
greatness is Filed with hard work and will never really end but will reap rewards
of greatness for our future community and children.”
