Cemetery bridge rebuilding
thanks to community effort

There is a new bridge to Mineola City Cemetery
off Belcher Street, thanks to a variety of people.
The damage was noticed the week after the
Dec. 27 torrential downpour delivered between
five and eight inches of rain in the Mineola area.
The bridge to the cemetery was washed out and,
when contacted by the Mineola Monitor last Mon-
day morning, Caretaker Billy McCalla said most
of the damage was caused by the rain. He said a
contractor had been contacted and was just wait-
ing for the ground to dry enough to rebuild the
bridge.
Crews began the repairs last week and by
Wednesday a new metal culvert was in place,
dirt had been moved and the new driveway was
formed. Rebar wire was in place as crews pre-
pared to pour 10 yards of concrete for a bridge
that should last many more years and storms.
Not only is there a new concrete bridge, but the
proprietors of the cemetery have voted to change
the name to Community Cemetery. A new sign is
being created and is expected to finished by the
end of the month.
Some people saw some criticism on social me-
dia because the city of Mineola was not repairing
the bridge because it is on private property.
Mayor Rodney Watkins said that would be con-
sidered "a gratuitous gift," just as giving employ-
ees time off on days that weren't official city holi-
days would be, "and we can't do that." It's not
legal. If the driveway had been built or repaired
in the past by the city, other than what was in the
right-of-way, didn't mean it could be done again.
He had been given an estimate by the county
commissioner of $10,000 to rebuild the driveway.
The mayor said that the city encouraged those
involved with the cemetery to obtain a 501 ©3 or-
ganization designation from the state.
Demethruis Boyd, pastor at St. Paul Missionary
Baptist Church, said the church partners with
McCalla "on what needs to be done financially
and with some manpower" on the upkeep of the
cemetery.
"People who I had a chance to communicate
with agreed they would help with the situation,"
Boyd said. That included money, supplies and
manpower "and with God's grace" the project
was arranged.
He said, "once again Mineola Community Bank
stepped up to the plate" and helped monetarily.
"Mineola Community Bank has been outstand-
ing in support of Mineola and the Wood County
community as far as projects that that will benefit
the community."
Sherrill Construction and KTI Concrete out of
Tyler were also supportive of the project. Boyd
said this provided "a great opportunity to work
with the city for the community and as far as that
goes, business organizations that have gotten
behind this project and operations of the city of
Mineola including the south side."
"The partnership that has existed for years su-
persedes most communities our size and the love
of our fellow man stands out as a testament in all
facets and relationships in Mineola," Boyd said.
He said the mayor and city council have done an
excellent job as public servants "to the entire city
of Mineola. We need to continue to find ways not
only to fix bridges, but to build bridges to con-
tinue to support these efforts."
Postal vehicle catches fire in Tyler
Last Tuesday a vehicle fire
at Holly Lake Circle in Tyler
midmorning resulted in a loss
of about 2,000 pieces of mail.
The postal worker's vehicle was
a total loss according Unites
States Postal Service Spokes-
man Sam Bolen.
Bolen said, "I don't think it
had any impact on Mineola. It
was all confined to the neigh-
borhood in Tyler. The fire to-
tally destroyed the vehicle."
Anyone who lives in the zip
code of 75703 and fears their
mail is lost should contact the
Postmaster's office at Tyler Hol-
ly Lake Circle.
