SAN ANTONIO — The count- the peak is not expected until
down clock is moving closer this month. The response in
and closer to opening day and both departments has led offi*
workmen are picking up the tern-_____
po in a bustle of activity to
make sure HemisFalr’68 is
ready for its millions of visi-
tors.
Landscaping is going in on the
banks of the lagoons. The mini-
monorail made its maiden voyage
around the 92.6-acre grounds the
first of the month, and the Swiss
_ Skyride continued its 1,000-pas-
senger per day average. Work-
men are still busy on the ex-
teriors of some of the multitude
of structures, but more are tuck-
ed away inside preparing ex-
hibits.
In all, Hemis Fair’68 is a flurry
of activity, and as each day
clicks off the countodwn clock,
the eyes of the world focus
more and more on the six-month
World’s Fair.
The race with the clock to be
prepared to meet the millions of
World s Fair visitors was obvi-
ous in the words of Marshall
Steves, president of HemisFair,
in his recent report to the board
of directors.
“It will be ready on time,” he
said. “We may be backing out
the gate with paintbrushes, but
it’ll be ready on time.”
The $13 million civic center
complex built by the city of San
Antonio is ready for the open-
ing. The 10,000-seat arena was
the site a month ago for a per-
formance by the Harlem Globe-
trotters. The San Antonio boat
show was held in the nuge ex-
hibit hall, and the seats have
been installed in the 2,800-seat
theater awaiting the first per-,
formance of the opera' Don Car-
lo” to inaugurate the beautiful
structure.
Many pavilions are completed
and truckloads of exhibits are
rolling up daily to others. The
622-foot Tower of the Americas,
focal point of the downtown
World’s Fair, is scheduled for
completion at mid-month; the
$6.75 million, federal pavilion is
substantially completed and car-
pet is being installed; and work-
men are installing the 42 differ-
ent movie screens in the over-
head portion of the $10 million
Institute of Texan Cultures.
The nearness of the opening
is pointed up in more ways
than construction and countdown
clocks.
Visitors Services,lInc. reports
,its daily telephone and mail load
tripling as vacation planners
from throughout the western
^hemisphere write for reserva-
tions. Although meeting 100 per
cent success in filling those
requests, VSI now asks those
inquiring to offer a choice of
severai dates, if possible, if
they desire rooms close to the
Fair.
More than $2 million in tickets
to the Fair have been sold and
