In such a year as this, food
seems unimportant. But we
keep thinking, this Thanksgiv-
ing week, about what has hap-
pened to turkey-and-fixin’s since
we were young.
We were a generation ahead
of cellophane - packaged birds
of today. Hence, our parents
bought a turkey ‘on foot’ from
the wagon yard. We were in-
terested observers. We stood
on the lowest rung of the board
fence and peered over as Dad
walked among the toms to find
the right one. We watched with
excitement as our turkey was
cornered, caught, and his legs
tied. He lay in the back of the
buggy, his hound, frightened eye
darting from one object to an-
