Twelfth Year
FRIDAY
Laaipasa.s, Texas, December 10, 1915
FRIDAY
Number 238
From McCreaviSle.
Verbena]
McCreaville, Dec. 6.—The
long looked for rain came and
fairly poured down until creeks
and tanks were full, and the
ground covered with a sheet of
water. No more complaint about
soarcity of stock water. The
grain crops will be revived, and
farmers are rejoicing generally.
Christmas festivities are being
looked forward to by the young
folks, and many presents are be-
ing prepared for that occasion.
The young folks are going to
have a box supper for the benefit
of the church some time before
Christmas. The time will be
announced later. All are invit-
ed to help us out in a good cause.
Mrs. Leon Landers visited
friends at Belton recently.
Mrs. Maggie Loving visited
her uncles, H. A. and J. N. Mc-
Crea, at Lampasas, for a few
days.
H. A. Supple, of Lometa, vis-
ited his mother Saturday and
Sunday.
Our pastor, Bro. Hunter, filled
his appointment Saturday night
and Sunday. A good crowd was
present and the sermons enjoyed
by all.
A singing was enjoyed Sun-
day evening at the home of Mr.
Lowe.
More Tax to be Levied.
Washington, Dec. 7.—The plan
which President Wilson today
asked congress to raise the mon-
ey for national defense contem-
plates increased internal taxes.
If the military and naval pro-
grams are carried out the total
estimated deficit on June 30,1917,
will be $235,000,000. By the re-
tention of the present duty on
sugar and the emergency war
tax the deficit can be reduced to
$112,000,000.
To raise this $112,000,000^ the
president proposes:
Reduction of exemption under
income tax law of $3000 for sin-
gle and $4000 for married per-
sons to $2000 and $3000, respect-
ively.
Reduction of figures at which
personal revenue tax begins from
$20,000 to $10,000 or $15,000.
Increase of tax on large in-
comes.
Tax of 1 per cent per gallon on
gasoline and naphtha, $10,000,-
000.
Tax of 50 cents per horsepow-
er on automobiles and internal
explosion engines, $15,000,000.
Stamp tax on bank checks,
$18,000,000.
Tax of 25 cents per ton on pig
iron, $10,000,000.
Tax of 50 cents per ton on fab-
ricated iron and steel, $10,000,-
000.

Clarenoe and Willie H. Moses,
and enjoying the visit while at-
