FOREWORD
WHO COMPILED THIS BOOK?
The Armstrong County Historical Association has compiled these stories of
pioneer families in an attempt to heJp preserve the county's history through the
people themselves. The stories, in as much as was possible, appear as written by
a family representative; hence there is little uniformity and there is considerable
individuality.
This is not as comprehensive a coverage of the county history as the as-
sociation wanted, because many families could not be reached or did not respond
to contacts.
A COLLECTION OF MEMORIES
The members of the Armstrong County Historical Association are not his-
torians. A historian has a solemn duty to hold to the factual data, and we have
endeavored so to do. But due to the circumstances of time and the many sour-
ces involved, we have chosen to call ourselves, not historians, but
"COLLECTORS OF MEMORIES"
The special aim of the book is to recognize the 75th. Anniversary of the or-
ganization of Armstrong County. The years covered are from 1876 to 1965, even
though the county was not organized until 1890.
