In our years at the paper
and In our personal lives we
have attended many events
such as singings, variety shows,
choirs performances at
schools, and more.
I've always enjoyed them,
but never gave them much
thought until last Thursday
night.
Our good friend Sam Rice
as the disc jockey in the Red
River County Courthouse
Player's "50s Rock N Roll
Show". We knew we wouldn't
be able to attend Saturday,
when the performances were
scheduled because of being in
the hay meadow,so we received
an invitation to tbe dress re-
hearsal.
Because of my older broth-
ers I can remember hearing
every song they sang, "At the
Hop" "Gotta Be Rock N Roll
Music", Sixteen Candles",
"AinP That a Shame" and
many more.
But what really impressed
me was the amount of work
put into the delivery of jokes,
dancing, timing and general
performance, plus (And this is
the biggest plus) what won-
derful vokes they had.
There were good musicians
in the form of pianists, guitar-
ists and a drummer. And oh,
how those voices filled the
courtroom!
Tbe soloists had wonderful
voices, clear, true and good.
The chorus really bad their
act together!
And, on the way back from
Clarksville I began to ponder
on voices and musicians that
we had beard at those singings,
shows and other places.
It led me to the conclusion
that there is an incredible
amount of musical talent in the
world!
Think of it, the joyous voices
uplifted in a church choir, the
performers who never aspire to
true fame, bat dearly love to
ddight a local audience, the tal-
ent that struggles to make a
name for themselves beyond a
local level by gamely struggling
up from the bottom towards that
elusive stardom.
Think about all the people
that you know with good voices,
don't you find there are a lot of
them?
It is truly a privilege to be
able to hear these people. They,
and thousands like them, are
always willing to sing because of
the joy and pleasure it gives
them.
So, to ail those singers out
there thut I have heard, but
never had the opportunity to
thank personally, Thank You.
I'm glad there is so much musi-
cal talent in the world!

The Bogata News this month has
another birthday. It was established
October 1910 by R.L. (Bob) Stanley
86 years ago. Mr. Bob Harden was
the first subscriber havi ng paid a $ 1.00
subscription fee to Mr. Stanley when
he told Mr. Harden he was starting a
newspaper in Bogata.
The news office was located at the
intersection of North Main and Sec-
ond Street N.W. It was housed in a
two story building, the upper part
being a Masonic hall. The building
was destroyed, in later years, by fire.
After one year, Mr. Stanley sold the
paper to Brice Collins and his wife
and son, Leon. Mr. Collins gave Mr.
Harden a picture of the printing press.
It was a large job press that printed a
6 column page, one page at a time.
The paper would consist of four pages.
The picture was printed in the Bogata
News in 1964. We couldn't locate it
for this article but we do have a pic-
ture of the first subscriber.
Mr. Collins sold the paper to J.P.
Nance. Martha Tanner of Oklahoma
operated the Bogata News after buy-
ing it from Nance. While living in
Bogata, she married Charley Allen.
They sold the paper to H.L. Kimsey
who, after operating it for two years,
sold it to Mr. Sam Holloway in Au-
gust 1937. After Mr. Holloway'sdeath
in May I960, it was published by his
widow, Mrs. Lucille Holloway of
Deport and later sold to Bob Wright

and then sold in 1982 to Bert West
who only kept it a short time. The
Bogata News is now owned by Tho-
mas and Nanalee Nichols of Deport.
During the past 86 years, The
Bogata News has chronicled every
important event in the lives on many
living in the Bogata area - births,
parties, graduations, weddings and
for many, an obituary. They are all
there - the joyous and the sad events
- the life stories of the paper's readers
and their families, (notes taken from
a paper printed in 1964.)
Mrs. Harden (first subscriber) was
a well respected farmer in this com-
munity - well known for his good
watermelons. His wife, Mattie
McGill, was the daughter of Samuel
and Ester Elizabeth Byrd McGill.
She graduated from Bogata High
School and attended McKenzie Col-
lege. Mr. Harden passed away July 4,
1954 at the age of 80. Mrs. Harden
kept the Bogata News coming to her
until her death in March 1972 at the
age of 94. Of the Harden's ten chil-
dren, four are surviving: John Harden
of Johntown, Ruby Sistrunk Maggie
I.ee and Ruth Couch all of Bogata.
As Mr. Harden was eager to sup-
port Bogata's first Bogata News, Mrs.
Harden supported the school's first
Homecoming and was recognized
several years as the oldest Ex Stu-
dent.
