A Lost Sense of Responsi-
bility Our Supreme Peril
There have been many efforts made
to account for the jrrcat aftermath
of tho war and its fearful results.
There have no doubt been many con-
tributing causes but I am suro one
of tho greatest of these is a lost sense
of responsibility on the part of our
people. It is not difficult for ono to
sco that in :mnny relations of life
there has been a letting down of the
high ideals of tho safe standards
which have prevailed In tho past.
Not to bo too comprehensive I ven-
ture to suggest that there has been n
lost senso of responsibility upon the
part of many of our people as to:
1. Authority.
Tho groat revolution which has been
raging in tho realm of tho moral and
tho social and tho political world has
also reached tho religious world.
Many aro scouting tho divino author-
ity of God's Word rejecting its in-
spiration disbelieving tho Virgin
Birth of Christ His blood atonement
and everything which wo havo re-
garded as necessary and fundamental.
It is not strange therefore that
when onco tho anchor has been lifted
as regards religious authority that
there should bo chaos and anarchy in
tho political social and moral realms.
Tho laws of tho land aro disregarded
tho social standards aro cast to tho
winds and moral standards are slip
ping. In tho state school homo and
church authority is discounted.
2. Good Citizenship.
There aro many responsibilities
resting upon us good citizens and
among these aro tho duty to obey
all laws to enforco all laws to vote
for good men and women for office
to give encouragement and aid to
thoso charged with enforcing the
laws. In many quarters are to bo
found thoso who do not livo up to
thoso sacred duties. Some violate tho
prohibition law or the law regulating
traffic because they do not liko them.
This is sowing tho seed of anarchy.
Wo have a Sunday law on tho statuto
book of this state but in most of our
cities theaters and picture shows run
nil day on Sunday in violation of tho
law. Wo havo sworn officials who
havo taken an oath to enforco tho
laws who make no effort to enforce
this law. Many citizens attend these
places and thus become supporters
and well wishers of this disregard for
DAISY HALL
law enforcement. It may be that in
some instances officers have sought
to enforce the laws and juries havo
turned loose tho violators of tho law
and the officers havo become discour-
aged and despaired of enforcing the
law. There is upon every good citizen
not only tho duty of obeying all laws
but of giving encouragement to tho
enforcement of all lawsf.
3. In tho Home.
It is the settled conviction of all
thinkers of tho day that tho greatest
thing which has contributed to the
lost sense of responsibility in all tho
relations of life is tho failure of tho
homes of tho land to function. If tho
homes fail to inculcato tho funda-
mental lessons of respect for author-
ity the sacrcdncss of life the duties
of citizens there is no other agency
which can concct this evil. In many
homes today there is no authority.
Each ono is a law unto himself. It is
not strange therefore that thcro
should bo a great weakness in socioty
failed to function as they ought in
as a whole when tho homes havo
imparting wholesome and helpful les-
4. In the Church.
Wo are supposed to take a solemn
covenant when wo como into the
church that we will sustain its wor-
ship support its work to tho utter-
most parts of the earth. A lost sense
of responsibility on the part of too
many today enables them to sooth
their conscicnco when they stay away
from tho prayer meeting when they
aro absent from tho Sunday evening
service or when they fail to give tho
financial support they promised to
give. The treasurer's books in our
churches tell some pathetic stories
and indeed reveal somo very painful
facts. If wo could succeed in enlist-
ing even ninety per cent of our peo-
ple in tho work of the church what
a new day wouiu como to our zion.
