Wyatt's Cafeteria
)to open near Hill
ByAHOHEMAYO
Friday EcWer
Despite tome opposition construction
of a new Wyatt'i Cafeteria near the
Hill Is scheduled to be completed in
August or September( said James
Muns owner of the cafeteria chain.
The location for the new cafeteria is
the northwest corner of Judge Ely
Blvd. and North 10th St.
Dr. George Evring professor of
English lives near the site where the
cafeteria is being built and he said
some controversy developed when
plans were being made for the
cafeteria. Ewlng lives at 925 E.N. 12th
St.
Ewing said the problems surfaced
because many homeowners in the
residential neighborhood did not like
the idea of re-zoning the area so that a
restaurant could be built.
The area originally was zoned
general so it did did not have to be re-
zoned said Randal Anderson city
planner.
But Anderson said the opposition
by the neighbors against Wyatt's caus-
ed the city planners to re-rone the area
as a planned development district. He
said by having the area re-zoned
helped insure the neighbors to the
north the property would be protected
from visual distractions such as signs
and the back of the cafeteria facing
their property.
With the zoning change Wyatt's is
under specific regulations such as be
ing responsible for building a 7-foot
solid fence of wood or masonery con-
struction to limit visual distractions
near the back of the cafeteria.
Muns said the decision to locate the
new cafeteria near the Hill was not
necessarily because it would be near
the university but because
demographically It would serve the
north side of Abilene.
"It's a good idea to put cafeteria
there" Ewlng said.'Tt was badly need-
ed on the Hill. You have to drive
across town to go to a cafeteria.
Students also agree that the cafeteria
has been placed tin a good location.
"A cafeteria will be a nice change
from Toco Bell" said Vickl Gootman
junior elementary education major
from Austin. "I like their macaroni
and cheese."
The new cafeteria will cover 10000
square feet. It will seat 275 people and
employ approximately 50 peopleThe
cafeteria was designed by Muns own
in-house staff of architects.
He said the chain consists of 123
cafeterias in nine states.
The Wyatt's Cafeteria in Westgate
Mall doted Oct. 26 because of some
mechanical difficulties which would
have resulted in costly expenditures
he said.
Muns is 1953 graduate of ACU and
serves as a member of the Board of
Trustees. He serves as chairman of the
National Development Council. He
also is a former Advisory board
member.

The Students' Association officers
voted Wednesday not to allot $500 to a
group of students working with the
children of battered women.
The decision had been tabled at last
week's meeting so the SA could study
the proposal and the Senate decided to
let the group use other means at its
disposal to raise funds.
If the Senate had appropriated the
money for the group it would have
come from the special needs fund.
Several Senate members said they felt
the request did not constitute a special
need.
Some members said they were not
against the project itself but they did
not feel they should spend students'
money ojnthat project.
Other Senate business included a re-
quest by Senate member Glen
Villanueva sophomore biochemistry
major from San Jose Calif. for Senate
support of a proposed running track to
be built around the campus. The
asphalt track would be two miles long
and eight feet wide said Villanueva.
He said a woman in California has
promised to donate $6000 for exercise
stations if ACU can match the fundi;
The stations would be located at inter-
vals around the track
Villanueva said he is working with
Dr. Tony Ash professor of Bible and
the Faculty Senate to raise public sup-
port for the track.
The Sing Song Executive Commit-
tee received a proposal that part of
Sing Song proceeds go toward the con-
struction of the track.
Some of the advantages of building
the track would include snfety and bet-
ter community relations Villanueva
said.
Last year two runners were hit by
cars and at least one woman was
harassed he said; therefore the track
would be a safer alternative.
Also the track would allow a place
for non-AbU people to run and help
build the university' relationship with
the surrounding community he said.
Villanueva said Moody Coliseum is
not a viable alternative because of its
limited hours of operation and the fact
that one has to run 10 times around
the concourse to run one mile.
This week's SA movie will be "Real
Genius." It will be shown in Culleri
Auditorium Friday and in Walling
Lecture Hall Saturday. Show times are
7 and 10 p.m.
