Pot Nixon Here? Service Station
Man Says He Gassed Her Car
Mrs. Richard Nixon was a sur-
prise visitor in Hrady Friday af-
ternoon.
Accompanied only by a Negro
chauffeur, she was in a green 195;j
Cadillac and stopped at (Jotcher’s
Service Station on West Com-
merce.
The attendant, Mark Poe, didn't
recognise her until she produced
a credit card with the name "Mrs.
Richard Nixon.”
‘This one has expired,
mam,” he told her.
"Can’t you trust the vice
president’s wife?" she smiled.
“I’m not supposed to take
an expired rard,” Poe still in-
sisted.
The Negro chauffeur then w>nt
to the car and produced another
credit card, this time unexpired,
and which Poe accepted.
"F wouldn't have known her,’
Poe said, laiter looking at a full
page picture of Pat Nixon in Life
magazine, Poe had no doubt, how-
ever. that he had met the vice
president's wife.
• • •
“That's who it was. I don't
know why she would be com-
ing through here. Maybe there
was another car following her
that I didn't see."
Mrs. Nixon commented about
“your nice clean town,” and the
chauffeur asked how far it is to
Abilene and if he could make it
in nn hour, adding that they had
come from San Antonio, "driving
100 to 106 miles per hour."
Poe suggested that he not try
to make Abilene in an hour, that
he might run across time highway
patrolmen.
"The car was hot and the radia
tor had sprung a leak at the top,”
Poo said. "They got gas. used the
rest rooms, and she priced every-
thing in the station.
"We had some pecans here, and
the started to buy some, but the
chauffeur said they already had
some in the car.”
• • •
Mrs. Nixon was dressed in
a brown tweed salt and brown
high heeled ehoes.
Poe was alone at the station
when the car stopped about 5 p. m
L. A. Gotcher, owner of the sta-
tion, already had left for Fri-
day's gams in Gatesville.
"They were here about 30 or
40 minutes," Poe said. "And they
said they might come bark this
way and ‘might aee you again in
two or three days’.”

The itrudy Bulldogs, game and

A A playoffs in favor of the Gates-
ville Hornets Friday night in the
hi-district at Gatesville.
The toe-to tin1 battle was even
closer than the score: Gatesville
Id, Hrady 14.
As it turned out. a pass inter-
ference call against the Bulldogs
—that set up a Gatesville field
goal in the final five seconds
of th* second quarter—was the
key play of the game.
It wai the break of the
game, a break that broke the
Hulleloge' hark.
The Doga were leading 8-fl but
were reeling under a pass attack
hy Gatesville QH Joe (brothers.
Fighting the clock, Carothera
passed the Hornet* to a first
down on the Brady 31 with 17
seconds remaining.
Two passes fell incomplete, and
then Carothers fired a long one.
Gatesville'a Byron McClellan and
Brady’s Charles Reynolds were
scrambling for it—and they and
the ball fell to the ground
Falling, too, was the official's red
flag, giving the Hornet* a first
down on the Brady 9.
Only five seconds remained
hefore halftime—time few one
more play. Th# Hornets quirk-
ly lined up, and Carutbera
kicked a field goal—a beauty,
aad Gatesville aeat la at the
half, leading 9-8.
Roth teams scored again In th*
second half, hut th# Hornet* still
had the protection of those three
points from the field goal.
The Bulldogs were badly out-
weighed, 24 pounds in the back-
field and 13 pounds in th* line,
hut that was only a minor factor
in their defrat. They could move
th* ball and even outgalned the
Hornets on the ground and led In
first down*. 17 Id. They were nev
•r forced to punt, although while
trying to retain possession they
took quite a gamble on several
