Il> MRS. L. B. SMITH
Have you ever wondered just
how you would feel if y u were
hoarding u Russian plane on Fii
day the l ’th and flying to Mos-
cow. Russia, for a week’s stay?
Well, we have fit U hand infoi
mat ion on that feeling in letters
written home by Miss Anita Jor-
dan. who is a member of the
Kn Her ( allege Tour.
I have asked permission to
pass along to you excerpts from
me of her letters to her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Jordan:
"We couldn't help but be a lit-
tle lenry of climbing aboard the
plane in I eningrad to fly here,
(Moscow). To think that we were
in u Russian plane, and it wa
Friday the l.’lth, too . . . The trip
was fine, though ... It seems
really impossible that we have
spent the lust few days right here
in tie* heart of the country that
is our greatest enemy.
“Before departure, I was glad
that wo were coming, but couldn’t
be too excited about spending a
week in what I thought would b
complete drabness and depression.
Now, however, I wouldn’t trade
this experience for anything.
“There are, of course, many
unpleasant aspects of being here.
The people are so dirty, and Rus-
sia everything here has an odor
about it like nothing I’ve ever
smelled before.
"The state itself has put a lot
of money into some stunning
structures. For instance, this
morning we visited the Exhibition
of Economic Achievement. Most
of us expected to he herded along
with a mob through a big building
and to be very bored, but were we
in for a surprise! This exhibition
covers 700 acres with many build-
ings, gardens, and fountains and
looks very impressive although
the insides of the buildings were
somewhat of a disappointment
We couldn’t have begun to see it
all in the amount of time we were
there, hut we did enjoy the short
time we had to skim over it.
* * *
“Today is Sunday, hut it is ju-t
like any other day of the week
here; everything is open all day
lor.'g. A few things close on Mon-
day but there is no one big day
of r< st like our Sunday. We have
been stunned by their point-blank
I nttitude toward religion. Those
we have asked al out it nctuull)
laugh and vay it Is for a few
old people only; then t niy lb d i
Communism. You kv.uw ti iof
course, but it seems that this is
the one characteristic of their
state which they don't seem to
try to veil or candy-coat.
“Yesterd; v we started out with
a tour of the Armory Chamber
Museum, which is filled with more
guilded carriages, many, many sol-
id gold and, silver dishes used by
the tsars, gorgeous clothes,
crowns, etc., than it is possible to
appreciate seeing them all at one
time. This museum is in hie the
Kremlin, Then we visited the three
cathedrals inside the Kremlin Wall
(not in use, of course), Red
Square, and Lenin's Tomb. A mon-
strous line was waiting to see Len-
in. I’ve never seen anything like*
the devcti n these people have
ft r him. We saw his actual hodj
lying in state. The room is re-
frigerated. and guards everywhere
and great reverence . . . You'll
notice that since we entered the
Iron Curtain we have been kept
busy by Intourist (luides every
minute. They do not a| prove of our
walking around alone. They want
to see that we stay out of mis-
chief.

Then the letter from Munich:
“We arose the next morning at
5:30 to hoard the train for a filthy
ride into Berlin. It seemed like lit-
tle America itself neon lights
and traffic which we hadn’t seen
in so long. We should be embar-
rassed to have spent as much
time as we did at the Berlin Hil-
ton. hut just couldn’t resist the
delicious hamburgers and milk
shakes. It seemed like the gayest
place we'd seen after coming from
Ru; sia.
“The fir t night we all went
to the Resi, the famous night club
with telephones at each table and
pneumatic tube installations for
sending messages around the
room. It's really a fancy place . . .
“The next morning we toured
East Berlin. It is very interesting,
of course, to have crossed the
border, but the tour itself wa
disappointing, as we saw very
little and were allowed off the
bu« only at Brandenburg (late and
the Monument to the Russian sol-

distinct.
"Py far the most interesting
thii.y I've seen yet this summer
i the Beilin Wall which we drove
around on our tour of West Berlin
in the afternoon. There’ no way
to describe the tension which can
he seen there in the guards, in the
pathetic families, some of which
come daily to certain parts of th •
wall to wave in the general direc-
tion of where they think thi ir

“People on tin Ea -t rn sid .
however, cannot even wave r thiy
will he punished. There are gra.i
ail al< ng the wall if those who
had tried to escape to the west
and had been kilhd; these are al-
ways covered with flowers and
wreaths.
“Only now has this crisis be-
come a r« ality to me. My heart
jumped right into my throat at
such sights. It heat anything we
aw in Russia!’’
