The men's and women's track
and field teams will have n final
chance to qualify for the national
meet when they compete in the U.S.
Air Force Quadrangular Saturday in
Colorado Springs Colo.
The meet will be the Final one be
fore the NCAA Division II Indoor
National Championships March II-
12 at Fargo N.D.
Coach Wcs Kitllcy said "I felt
really good about last weekend. We
had a lot of people qualify and a lot
of people improved themselves. I'm
being really positive but I think
this week will be the same."
Kiltley said he is positive about
the men's team. "Almost every pro-
visional qualifier is in" he said
meaning most of ACU's provision-
al qualifiers probably will compete
at the national meet. The NCAA
sets the automatic standards high to
avoid too many qualifiers he said.
For example Kittley said Clint
Dissctt has the best high jump mark
in the nation at 6-11 but the auto-
matic qualifying mark is 7-0.
Kittley said both ACU teams
have several automatic qualifiers
because both arc among the best in
the nation. Few teams have as many
automatic qualifiers he said.
Although the women have more
automatic qualifiers than the men
Kittley said some of the provisional
qualifiers need to improve to guar-
antee themselves spots at the
national meet.
"I feel really good about Bigna
Samuel in the mile and Lindsay
Welsh's provisional marks in the
long and triple jumps arc very
high" he said. Kim Dartcc and
Christy Boles need to improve in
the high jump as do Yvette Wick-
ham in the 400-meter dash and
Ruth Jaime in the 5000-rnctcr run
Kittley said.
The job of a trainer usually is an
anonymous one.
Because trainers care for injured
athletes those who follow sports
teams hope a trainer is not needed
very often but athletes who need
their services know exactly how im-
portant trainers arc.
Danelle Hayes junior biology
major from Imperial Neb. serves
that role for ACU's women's bas-
ketball team.
"My job is to help prevent
injuries and take care of athletes
after they have been injured"
Hayes said.
She said she usually comes in
about an hour before practice starts
so she can attend to everyone who
needs her.
Danelle said she came to ACU
when former trainer Wes Speights
offered her a scholarship as a train-
er. She also had a family connection
to ACU. Her brother Bryan Was a
senior on the Wildcat baseball team
that won the 1993 Lone Star Con-
ference championship.
She attended York College in
York Neb. for one year just as
Bryan did. "Our whole family is
athletic" she said. That situation
made her interested in working
closely with athletes.
Danelle said she hopes to attend
medical school at the University of
Nebraska after she graduates "be-
cause it's close to home. I'm a long
way from home here."
The Wildcats will not complain
about that. They have suffered
many injuries this season which
Danelle has helped to lessen.
Jennifer Clarkson sophomore
interdisciplinary studies major from
Piano and the team's leading scorer
and rcbounder was slowed by a
foot injury early in the season.
Clarkson said "Danelle is the
