S'WEST STATE BOBCATS CRUSH
H. P. C. YELLOW JACKETS 54-13
By PAUL FERGUSON
SAN MARCOS Oct. 24 South-
west Texas State lowered the
boom on Howard Payne's Yellow
Jackets here Saturday night to
wina non-conference football one-
sider 54 to 13.
It marked the second straight
year that the Bobcats of the Lone
Star Conference have run rough-
shod over a Jacket team. Last
year's 55-0 defeat was one of the
worst ever suffered by Howard
Payne.
Somewhat consoling to the
Stingers however is the fact that
they've won 15 out of 25 games
from the San Marcos maulers
while two tilts have ended in ties.
But there was nothing the Jack-
ets could do to stop the avalanche
of touchdowns that snowed them
PROTEST UPHELD;
1-0 FORFEIT SCORE
The protest lodged by How-
rd Payne against the Austin
College Kangaroos which con
cerned the use of two ineligible J
players by the 'Roos was up-
held Wednesday by the Texas
Conference.
The 26-20 defeat the Jackets
suffered at the hands of Austin
College was erased from the
record and the blue and gold
was declared winner by a 1-0
forfeit score.
Players in question were
Jack Taylor center who play-
ed freshman and varsty ball
for the University of Texas in-
luding the last year's Cotton
Bowl game; and Billy Bookout
back who also played for the
University of Oklahoma.
The conference had previous-
ly voted these two ineligible
by a vote of 4-1 the only vote
in favor of their eligibility
coming from Austin College.
This decision by the confer-
ence representatives gives the
Jackets a clean slate in confer-
ence play with one victory and
no defeats. The next confer-
ence game for Howard Payne
Will be against Texas A&I
in Brownwood November 7.

under this 1953 landslide. They
fought with every weapon they
possessed but they ran out of
fuel.
The Bobcats scored early and
they scored late.
They ran they passed and they
ran some more.
Howard Payne didn't dent the
scoreboard until the third period.
That came when Southwest Tex-
as was leading 40-0. Bill Jones
end set up the touchdown by re-
covering a Bobcat fumble on the
Teachers' four-yard line.
Bill Murphy rammed the line
for three then Clyde Blair whiz-
zed over fo rthe score. Melvin
Lindsey's extra point was good
and it was 404-7.
The Jackets reached paydirt
again after 11 minutes deep in
the final quarter. Another Bobcat
bobble this time from the South-
west Texas 38 got things rolling
with Quarterback Jerry Millsapps
pitching to Jim Paul Norman for
28 yards and again for the touch-
down after Blair's 15-yard spin
around end. Lindsey missed the
conversion try leaving the score ;
54-13.
