Brother and Sister Team . . .
When the nomination committee came up with their report for of-
ficers of the HPC Oratorio Chorus an unusual circumstance pre-
sented itself. A brother and sister were nominated for president
and secretary-treasurer respectively for the 1953-54 school year.
Harlen and Anita Center of Berkaley California were elected
to lead the student activities of the 108 -voice group. Both are
graduates of the Berkeley High School and Anita had two years
at the Contra Costa Junior College in California. They came to
Howard Payne in the fall of 1952. Both had studied voice under
Dr. Clyde Jay Garrett at GoldenGate Baptist Seminary before he
came to HPC.
Mission Band Play Given
on Missions Night Program
The Howard Payne Volunteer tist Church Brownwood at that
Mission Band for '53-'54r under church's regular mid-week pray-

presented on the B. S. U. "Mission
Night" program Friday evening
Oct. 23 in Mims auditorium.
The play is "White Christmas"
by Dorothy Clarke Wilson. It
deals with an average American
family who contribute liberally
to missions but who miss an op-
portunity when missions comes
into their home.
Members of the cast were Rob-
ert Orr as William Marshall;
Glenda Perrin as Kate Marshall;
Walter Edwards as Bob Marsh-
all; Jack Carter as John Liang;
and Johnny Pedrosa as Charlie.
The play will be presented at
First Baptist Church Necessity
Sunday Nov. 1.
It was presented Wednesday
evening Oct. 21 at Central Bap-

H. H. Hargrove was guest speak-
er for the occasion.

sembled. Camie Jay introduced Mrs. Har
grove who spoke on "Light."

The Howard Payne College
Music Department presented the
annual faculty recital Tuesday
evening October 27 in Mims
Auditorium.
On the program were members
of Howard Payne's music faculty
headed by Dr. Clyde Jay Gar-
rett dean of fine arts.
Leota Bartholomew instructor
in organ played the Concert
Overture from "Christmas Can-
tata No. 142" by Bach-Biggs and
"Dreams" by Stoughton.
Dr. Garrett baritone sang
"Border Ballad" by Co wen: "The
Two Grenadiers" by Schumann
and "Gunga Din" by Spross.
A brass quartet led by W. R.
Parker Yellow Jacket band direc-
tor played "The Dream" by
Schumann and "There Shall Be
Singing" from "Requiem" by
Verdi. Besides Mr. Parker who
played the cornet there were stu-
dents Roy Thomas Flournoy
trumphet; Dale Car michael
french horn; and Billy Baskin
baritone.
Myrtle McBroom instructor in
voice sang five numbers. They
were "Vissi d'Arte Vissi ci'Am-
ore" from "Tosca" by Puccini;
"Ah! Love But A Day" by Pro-
theroe; "L.Heure Exquise" by
Hahn; "Mam'selle Marie" by
Guion; and "When I Have Sung
My Songs" by Charles.
Two numbers were played by
B. Combs Denman piano in-
structor. Numbers included the
first movement of "Sonata Op.
31 No. 2" by Beethoven and
"Etude Op. 10 No. 3" by Chopin.
"Total Eclipse" from "Samson"
by Handel; "M'Appari Tutf
Amor" from "Martha" von Flou-
tow; "I Hear A Thrush at Eve"
