They're our guests
let's help them enjoy
A large crowd of visitors are expected to
descend on the ACU campus this weekend as
they make their annual pilgrimage to Abilene
to enjoy the Homecoming festivities.
The travelers come from all over the
country to see old friends to enjoy the
Homecoming musical and the football game
to see their children who are students and to .
revive memories of ACU that live in their
hearts and minds.
But to many current students the visitors'
return means problems.
Because of the limited number of parking
places on campus students have to park
further from their destinations. This can be a
problem if one's legs are not accustomed to
walking an extra 200 feet.
Also the lines into the Bean will be longer
and some students may think they have the
right to cut in line because they live here.
Fifteen minutes can't make the difference
between life and death but it may seem like it
to a student who has 45 minutes between
classes to get something.to eat.
Patience also may be worn by people
driving around the campus slower than the
average student usually drives and crowding
places usually left open to students.
But no matter how frustrating they may be
Homecoming visitors are here to enjoy
themselves. They come back with happy
memories of days past and expect things to be
just as happy. They are guests on our campus
and should be treated with understanding and
respect.
Treat these visitors in the same manner you
would like to be treated five years from now
when you make a nostalgic trek back to your
alma mater.

Sing a song of Homecoming
Since baseball is over and the NFL strike
continues what better way to while away the
the hours of an autumn weekend than by
spending them at an old-fashioned
Homecoming festival. While fervently
researching this phenomenon in the archives
of the Brown Library I happened upon a
dusty yellowed copy of sheet music sand-
wiched between Pages 44 and 45 of a 1937
undergraduate catalog. Although I don't read
music the tune looked vaguely familiar. The
full impact of this serendipitous discovery hit
me as I read through the verses. Here they
are reproduced in their glorious entirety:
1 ) 0 dear Christian College we love you
Especially when Homecoming's here;
With teeth shining brightly we exes
Are grinning from ear to ear.
To you we've proved faithful and loyal
(We even wear Homecoming mums) ;
And gladly we're staying indebted
By sending our daughters and sons.
Chorus:
Yes we've pledged our funds to Christian
To her our dollars due;
But we don't regret nor could we forget-
All the great times spent here too.
Bp!i
a little lev-ity
Jeff Lcvlng
And check out a carnival booth ;
But what we cherish most is the chance to
roast
At the bonfire rendezvous.
3) We'll see Friday eve's Freshmen Follies
And Saturday's big football game;
The mornings we breakfast with exes .
"Shenandoah" at night we acclaim.
Reunions meet all over campus ;
We're running both thither and yon.
And when Sunday is finally over
i ne msi oi our energy's gone.
(2) It starts with a Chapel in Moody
That used to be in Sewell Hall; .
But now Sewell's used as a theatre "'
They say it was some overhaul ! . i? '
The campus has" changed much Since '30;
In fact some tfoyld surply get lost
Were it not for familiar aromas .
Likebrisketand barbecue sauce.
Chorus:
So we all attend the cookout
a s
Chorus:
But we all forget exhaustion
And the smiles soon reappear;
In each ear is heard those encouraging words
"See y'all this time next year ! "
Yes it was true. I had found one of the
original drafts of our alma mater. How it
evolved to it's present form is still under in-
vestigation but a note scribbled in pencil at
the bottom of the sheet has provided some
clues:
-"Music by L. Burford words by Bonzo
Buckaloo.
'??e f?onz(about reworking the lyrics. Ask
Jboirt "Mo6dyf-and this nonsense about
Sewell being a theater. Also we need
something about purple and white."
