Band looks forward to Nice
With many of the doors and
windows on campus announ-
cing their destination the
Cowboy Band left for Nice
France a little after 12:30
p.m. yesterday afternoon. It Is
the band's third overseas trip
since 1984 and their second
trip to Nice.
The band was invited back
by city officials to participate
In Carnival '89 on the Cote
d'Azur. This festival is Nice's
version of Mardi Gras and
may be the oldest Mardi Gras
festival known of.
Band member Danny
Richardson said "It'll be bet-
ter than the first trip. We've
been before so we're going as
kind of an honored guest
since they've invited us
back."

Richardson said organizers
in Nice were first attracted to
the band because of the
western outfits. "Other col-
leges claim to be cowboys
but they don't Incorporate
that into the uniform" said
Richardson.
The band flies into Paris
first and then will transfer to a
flight to Nice. Their hotel will
be on the Riviera overlooking
the bay.
The band will go to work on
Saturday with a big Battle of
Flowers Parade passing
down a route full of bouti-
ques posh hotels and fine
shops. "The Flowers Parades
are supposed to be more sub-
dued but they compare to
really exciting ones here"

said Richardson a veteran of
the band's 1986 trip to the car-
nival. In fact Richardson is one
of only seven current
members who went to Nice in
1986. Norm Harris one of
those for whom this is their
first trip said "Everybody's
looking forward to it
especially the freshmen
(which refers to all first-year
band members regardless of
classification). I'm not really
sure what to expect. It's a dif-
ferent culture and a different
language."
Richardson said the band
will also take part in carnival
parades. These parades differ
from those in the states
because the paraders go up
and down both sides of the
street simultaneously. Plus
the crowd moves freely
among the paraders said
Richardson.
"I look forward to the
crowds in the carnival
parades. People are much
freer then and sometimes it's
at night so you can see peo-
ple stacked up high as
buildings. There's so much
confetti that it looks like
newsreels of ticker-tape
parades. It's what I think of
when I think of a parade. It's
definitely the most exciting
I've been In in six years."
Besides their sponsors and
a number of other guests the
band wasl also accompanied
by the Six White Horse
Riders under the direction of
Dr. W.O. (Doc) Beazley. The
horses themselves however
did not go. The riders will
walk in the parades carrying
the traditional flags.
