WEST TEXAS.
'To a large per cent of the people
West1 Texas begins when the--train
leaves Fort Worth and to many others
Fort Woh is in West Texas notwith-
standing the fact that Fort Worth Is
160 miles east of the center of the
state. If you should find the center
of Texas and draw a line 100 miles in
circumference you would take ih Abi-
lene yet there aro thousands of Tex-
ana who think that Abilene is located
In tho far west. Be that as It may
Texas is awakening to the Importance
of tho west. Recently a gentleman
handed out some information in an
address before the business men's
banquet at Fort Worth that Bhows
that the west is coming into its own.
Tho Fort Worth Star-Telegram in
quoting from the address declared
that it was an oyo-opener to most of
the people present. Some of the facts
mentioned by Mr. H. C. Burke Jr.
whomado the address follows:
"During the ten years ending 1910
the population in West Texas was in-
creased by 50.G per cent while East
Texas Increased by only 13.4. M6re-
over the now population was of the
most desirable kind a race of sturdy
home builders who prosper by their
enterprise and labor and who contrl'
bute to tho prosperity of the commu-
nities in which they live. The census
figures of 1910 show that there were
then 2G.O0O moro will to people in West
Texas than in East Texas and that
the ratio of negroes to white people
was bne negro to thirteen white- poo
pie In West Texas as compared with
five negroes to thirteen whites in East
Texas.
"A survey made by tho United
States government in 1913 shows the
per capita wealth in West Texas then
was $1146.31 as against $507-04 per
capita In EaBt Texas. Only.four states
In the union have a greater per capltn
of wealth than West Texas while
twenty-eight states have a greater per
capita wealth than East Texas.
Commenting on the address the1
Star-Tel egra'ih said!
"The significance of this is empha-
sized whoa it is"" borne In mind thnt
tho development of" West Texas lias
Just begun. Mn Burke called atten-
tion to this particularly pointing out
that It is not a ''one crop" section
that Its prosperity is based upon a
wide diversity of crop and 'further-
more there are still 30000000 acres of
fertile and'tillable'lahd that is not yet
under cultivation. This land will bo
put under cultivation In tho 'time Just
ahead and tho rural credits law by
supplying reasonably cheap money on
long time will hasten this process
With forty years to pay the money
borrowed for the purpose of buying
land settlers will be able to withstand
a few "crop 7oilures"'and"anvIncrease'ln
the number 5f hoiho-ownlng farmers
will result.
''Wo have pointed out frequently in
these columns that tho destiny of Fort
Worth arid of West Texas and the Pan-
handlo are bound up together. Their
interests aro identical anil the most
immediate duty confronting the citi-
zens of Fort Worth is t'o prpmoto clos-
er relationships with the folks In the
section 'west Of 98' WO should be-
come better acquainted With one an-
other and Fori Worth should stund
Bolldly at all times for Anything which
wJU mean tho development 6t that sec-
tion. Incidentally a step in this di-
rection will Co taken In tho next lopls-
Jaturd when tho Tarrant county dele-
gation lines up for the creation of a
now Agricultural & Mechanical Col-
lege In that section. This nlready is
nssUred and Fort Worth is with West
Texas in that fight. In future Fprt
Worth must Btand with West Texas in
every fight because what is Wflst
Texas' fight ft Fort Worth's fight.
Other opportunities wljl arise to chal-
lenge Fort Worth's loyalty to West
Texas rand It most; never be found
.wanting. An enlightened self-interest
jdemands bucIi an attitude as a fixed
policy and the samo motive will de-
mand a similar policy from" nil of tho
.towns of West Texas. West Texas te
developing a significant Bolf-conscloua-'
hess. It 1b beginning to realize Us pe-
culiar needs. It needs railroads for
pno thing and It Is going to go after
jthem. It needs certain legislation and
it Is going to go after that t6o. It is
;begiimlng to realize Us possibilities
and its power to develop those possi-
bilities Into realities. Fort Worth can
assist in all of this. And the realiza-
tion which is coming to us that wo are
nn integral part of West Texas assures
that It will glvp that assistance en-
thusiastically. "
