COWBOYS TO FACE TULSA
(Continued from page 3)
They established an average of
480 yards per game through 11
tilts last season.
Offense Trouble
Meanwhile Coach M u r r y
Evans has troubles with his of-
fense. Last Saturday's loss 26-7
to Arizona State of Tempe
showed that the Cowboy back-
field definitely misses the services
of Dunny Goode second best
runner in the land last year and
Bob Hart ' all-Border Conference
quarterback.
Evans will have to design his
defensive patterns without the
services of Maurice Waguespack
two-year letterman center who
will be out of action because of
leg injuries sustained in the
game with Tempe.
Coach J. O. Brothers' team will
be opening its '52 season against
the Cowboys.
45 On Trip'
Wednesday Evans expected to
take about 45 boys on the trip
The Cowboys left Friday by two
chartered planes for Tulsa.
When Tulsa and the Cowboys
met for the first time last year
the Hurricane knocked the Pokes
who established a. record 37 pass
interceptions last season com-
pletely out of the pass defense
department with eight comple-
tions for 320 yards and two
touchdowns.
A big bruising Negro back
John Henry Johnson and a tough
almost imprtegnable Tempo de-
fense spelled doom for the H-SU
Cowboys in their opening game of
the 1952 football season last Sat-
urday night.
The Sun Devils won the game
26-7- A1
It was the first victory for the
Arizona school over the Cowboys
in the history of their 11 game
Johnson 200 pound fullback
transfer from St. Marys merci-
fully was not called upon to tote
the mail on every down. In some
ten attempts he gained 106 yards
not including a 63-yard runback
of a punt for one of his three touch-
downs. Never A Loss
He was never thrown for" a loss.
He played considerably less than
half the game.
Arizona State controlled the
ball and outclassed the Cowboys
from the start. The Sun Devils
opened a drive late in the first
quarter which resulted in pay
dirt early in the second frame.
Johnson set it up and executed
Two minutes later Johnson took
Quarterback Jim Riddle's punt on
flio Ariznnsi V7 vara line ana raceu
63 yards for the six points. Pavlich
converted and tne ueviis iea ut
halftime 14-0.
Two Quick TD's
Two quick touchdowns came af-
ter six minutes of the third ses-
sion. Bob Hendricks shot a pass
to Gene Mitcham in the end zone
for the touchdown.
A minute later Ed Henderson
intercepted a Cowboy pass on the
letter's 29 yard stripe and on the
first play Johnson slashed throuh
the line cut to his left and cross-
ed the goal line untouched.
Hardin-Simmons got its lone
counter after seven minutes of the
fourth quarter. Ogden Compton
who alternated behind the gun with
Captain Riddle fired a pass to
End D. C. Andrews on the goal
line for the touchdown.
Jim Vaughn reserve halfback
kicked the extra point.
Ankle Injury
Maurice Waguespack an out-
standing performer for the Pokes
was carried from the field in the
fourth quarter after stopping Bob
Tarwater. He suffered an ankle
injury.
Right along with Waguespack in
top level performance were D. C.
Andrews Chester Lyssy Bill Mur-
ry Wayne Carter Wayne Adams
and Pat Tone.
Carter and Adams seemed to
account for about 60 per cent of
the tackles in the first part of the
game with Andrews and Lyssy
coming in for a fair share.
Riley Cross Joel Combs Rodney
Williams and Art Cunningham
were other hard workers in the
I backfield.

No Push Over
The Trinity Tigers should prove
no push over fo rthe H-SU pokes.
The new head coach of the Tigers
is W. A. MacElreath a Texas boy
who played high school football at
Greenville and college ball at Van-
derbilt. MacElreath came to Trinity after
six years a& freshman coach at
Tulane University. This is his
first head coaching assignment.
A new line coach is also with the
Tigers this season. He is Winslow
Knowles whe had been at Tulane
as assistant line coach for three
years. Knowles is a North Texas
State graduate and a veteran high
school and junior college coach in
Texas.
W. N. James is athletic director.
18 Lettcrmen
The Tigers will have 18 letter-
men goihg against the Pokes. Mac-
Elreath has improved the back-
field play of his team this season.
Robert Sweet Claude Brinkley
and Andy Kalminir should be able
to make the newly installed T-for-mation
offense go in fine style
against the Cowboys.
The week following the H-SU
battle the Tigers will play the
Texas Chritsian Horned Frogs
last year's champs in the South-
west Conference.
Last year's squad has been
riddled by draft calls and Know-
les hopes that the newly organiz-
ed ROTG unit on the Trinity cam-
pus will stabilize the situation.
