GIVING 'EM FITZ
By LARRY FITZGERALD
OOAdH BILL SGOTT should be and I'm sure is mighty
proud of tho way his basketball team has been performing for
the past couple of weeks. Bight now the Cowpokes season rec-
ord stands at three wins and five losses.- 1 . '. V -v
Percentage wise we're not even batting .500 to use an ol
baseball term but the wins have all been good ones. "We've seen
victories over New Mexico Military Institute 'Southern Metho-
dist University (who have been tapped as the Southwest Con-
ference winners) and the latest over Texas Wesleyan our. first
before the homo folks.
An the loses' haven't been too bad. In each contest that we
lost the Cowboys were leading at one time or another. And in
most cases led throughout the ball game until the final quarter
of play.
Then too the development and advancement of the players
has been remarkable. Durwood Smith Tom Burks and Larry
Roberts have in my opinion shown tremendous improve-
ment. Smith's play against- NorJTexas State has earned him a
starting role on the Poke five.
Burks' entrance into the Texas Wesleyan contest saved the
ball game for the Pokes just when it looked like the Rams were
going to pull a big upset. .
And this is strictly one man's opinion Roberts played
the best game so far of his college career against Texas Wes-
leyan. THAT UNFORTUNATE accident in New Mexico has kept
Joe Simpson sidedlined from the Cowboy five for nearly a week
and a half now. But Simpson was suited out against Texas Wes-
Jeyan last Tuesday night and should be ready to go when the
Pokes start battling Border Conference teams in January.
It would be hard to mention the basketball team this sea-
son without the names of the two tallest boys on the squad
Hank Green and newcomer Bob Tremaine.
If Hank continues the' pace he has' set so far this season
"don't see how lie can miss making All-Border Conference this
3rear. And Tremaine just a freshman will probably make a name
for himself in basketball at H-SUthat hasn't been done in quite
some time. '
And while you are testing over the Christmas holidays
coach Scott and his boys will be working and working hard.
The Pokes will enter the Sunshine Tournament in Portales New
Mexico Dec. 29-31.
Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Cowboys didn't
win the tourney top.
y
BORDER CONFERENCE plays opens in Abilene Jan. 5
the first day after the holidays with Arizona State (Flagstaff)
providing the opposition. Then three days later Arizona State
(Tempe) rolls in to Rose Field House. Jan. 13 the Texas Tech
Red Raiders move into Abilene.
We're in for some good basketball pretty soon!

Buttons Set High
Scoring Record
Possibly the greatest freshman
basketball team that has hit the
Hardin-Simmons forty acres in a
long time made the home crowd
proud of them Tuesday night
when they broke the all time
high score record that any Cow-
boy basketball team has scored.
The game between the Buttons
and Tarletori State was a close
game up until the half but after
half time they began to sink al-
most every shot taken. The final
score read 93-5.7 with the Bottons
on the top end.
This broke the old record of 84
points for the Cowboys which
was made against the Wolters
Air Force Base last year.
The high point man for the
Buttons was Jim Reed from San
Angelo. Jim while he was in
high school was voted the most
valuable player and it seems as
.though he may hold that same
title around the forty acres. He
scored a total of 16 points for the
high point position while Glen
Harlin was very close behind
with a total of 15 points.
The Buttons now hold a four
game win with nary a loss to their
credit. However this does not in-
clude the game Wednesday night
with San Angelo Junior College.

Poly Wins High School
Tourney Fourth Time
Last week-end in Rose Field
House at the annual High School
tournament it seemed to be the
same thing all over again be-
cause the team that won the
championship was the same that
won it last year in fact four
years in a row Poly of Fort
Worth.
Poly was given a scare during
the last quarter when Borger
moved out in front by a margin
of six points four minutes be-
fore the game was over. But due
to the slick control of the ball
and the new three-minute rule
Poly proceeded to advance until
they 'had secured a good lead
going on to be the champions.
The third placb winner was
Abilene bver San Angelo and the
consolation winner was Birdville
over Coleman.

Cagers Bow to Frogs
Upset SWC Mustangs
The H-SU cagers stayed close
on the heels of the Texas Chris-
tian Froggies Wednesday in an
inter-conference basketball game
played at Fort Worth but lost
