HSU TO MEET
ARIZONA HERE
By D. A. ISABEL
Do or die will be the words
this next week as the Har-din-Simmons
Cowboy basket-
ball team faces the greatest
test of all University of
Arizona on their own hard
wood floor Rose Field House.
The game will be played on
Monday night at 8 p. rh.
When the Pokes were guests
of the Arizona group they
- were more or less surprised
at the officiating that they
. jcecev.sd; Jj.ut came away
from the state with the same
draw back that any Texas
team has had after playing
one of the Arizona schools
the officials did a fair job.
The fouls for the first en-
counter between the two
teams ran 31 for H-SU and
17 for the home team. It is
understandable that occas-
ionally a team might be off
Tjut not this much off es-
'pecially during the last three
minutes of the game.
The only reason one might
Jump the ' officials is this
it seems to .happen every
time the game is played on
the local court or field.
Once would be overlooked
but not a continuous hap-
pening. A very excellent report
Green Has Second
BC Score Record
Hank Green 6-foot-7 Hardin-
Simmons University center pull-
ed back into the No. 2 spot in the
Border Conference scoring race
Monday night just seven points
behind West Texas State's 6-7
sharpshooter Troy Burrus.
But Green's stay there may not
be for long.
Burrus has 138 points and
Green 131. But fourth place Paul
Nolen 6-foot-10 Texas Tech cen-
came back with the Pokes
about the officiating of the
other two Arizona schools
Tempe and Flagstaff. They
seemed to be very well pleas-
ed and certainly only the
players themselves have the
right to say whether or not
they committed a foul not
the spectators.
So with officials that pos-
sibly will show no favoritism
the 'tussle between the Ari-
zona Wildcats and the Cow-
boys will probably be one
not to miss.
Don't miss the Senior Folies
underclassmen. See the seniors
with their hair down. Tickets 50c

n Aye f a W-
ter needs only 20 points tonight
against Texas Western to pull
into the top spot with 139.
And Bill Brewer the Texas
Western star who leads the cir-
cuit with 62 free throws can pull
up from his sixth place in the
scoring race in games at Texas
Tech tonight and West Texas
State Wednesday. If Brewer has
good nights in both of those
games he may at least temporar-
Jy take qver the No. 1 spot in the
scoring race.
Lester Dean of Tempe third in
the scoring race with 121 won't
get another chance to improve
his position until Thursday
when Tempe invades Arizona.
Green also can up his total Thurs-
day when the suddenly-strong
New Mexico Aggies invade Abi-
lene. Doyle Brunson is currently the
hottest Cowboy. He has spurted
into a tie with Nolen for fourth
place in the scoring race with 119
and is just 12 points behind team-
mate Green in the conference
scoring.
Jim Covert of Hardin-Simmons
is tied for 17th with 78.
POKES STAY IN BC RACE
(Continued from Page 3)
2:30 later. That just about spelled
doom for the visitors.
The fourth period consisted of a
battle of the foul lines as H-SU
lost Doyle Brunson on the penal-
ty rule. Brunson hit the loop for
12 points before retiring.
Green's 15 points pushed his 10
game BC scoring to 148 points
only 18 points shy of leader Troy
Burrus of West Texas who has
166. Green now is in third place
in the BC scoring parade one
point behind Bill Brewer of Texas
Western.
In a' preliminary game the
H-SU Buttons eased past Cisco
Junior Collece. 80-77. Delnrtr Pors
led the' Poke freshman team by
tallying 2d points while Cowboy
Glenn Harlin chipped in 12. How-
ever individual scoring honors in
the contest went to Cisco's Hall
who dropped in 31 points.

Fifty Hopefuls Out
Is Spring Training
By MITCH MALOUF
Brand Sports Writer
According to Head Coach Mur-
ray Evans there are approxi-
mately 50 athletes that greeted
him for spring training that
started last Thursday Feb. 5.
There are 27 returning lettermen
from which Coach Evans will
build his 1953 football team that
faces the toughest schedule that
the Cowboys have ever played.
The returning lettermen in-
clude: linemen Wayne Adams
D. C. Andrews Ed Crow Gran-
ville King Chester Lyssy Buddy
Nail David Nelson Jim Flaming
Floyd Haddock Norman Skip-
worth John Waedekin George
Logan Jerry Ulke and Ken
West.
Backs Riley Gross James Cox
Art Cunningham Rodney Wil-
liams Sam Walker Drennon
Daves J. C. Collins Joel Combs
Roy Halliburton Jim Vaughn
Dee Windsor and Jerry Jeffries.
Spots of Concern
Coach Evans said that the
spots that he is concerned mostly
about are left tackle left guard
and center. These are the posi-
tions that hurt him most by
graduation. He has many fine
boys to pick from to fill these
spots including left tackles:
David Nelson Carman Bonner
Don Dilday Buddy Nail and Ken
West; centers Qeorge -Logan
Howard Burtschell Pete Murray
and Robert Howington; left
guards Granvill King Floyd
Haddock Johnny Rodgers Gene
Tone and Jerry Ulke. Also at
other various positions are sev-
eral other returning lettermen
and starters.
The head tutor came out with
the statement that the boys still
have not looked as good as they
ought to and that all positions are
wide open to any boy who is good
enough to fill the one platoon
system. In commenting on the
new rule eliminating the two-
platoon system he 'said that it
would not hurt him anymore
than any other school that we
play.
Every one is invited to come
out and watch the Cowboys
workout each afternoon and view
the daily scrimmage that will
take place. Coach Evans be-
lieves in hard work and even the
boys being in shape for spring
training.
This cuts down on injuries
and it will help mold a better
team.
