Committee Limits
Baseball Slate
The Athletic Committee voted
this week to limit the H-SU base-
ball team to not play any more
baseball games other than those
already scheduled.
Due to an excess in cuts taken
by the baseball team mostly com-
posed of basketballers the team
will not represent the Border
Conference in NCAA play had
they been chosen by the flip of
the coin to do so.
Arizona victors over Tempe
is expected to represent the Bor-
der Conference in NCAA play.

Model "T" Ford
Back to Abilene
An ex Hardin-Simmons foot-
ball great John (Model T) Ford
has been signed to the coaching
staff at Abilene High School.
Ford who will work as an as-
sistant to head coach Charles
(Chuck) Moser will be conduct-
ing the backfield activities come
August 1.
The (Model T) first came to
Abilene in 1947 where he enrolled
at Hardin-Simmons and thus
began at great career which
reached its climax in 1949 and 50.
During the seasons of '49 and
'50 Ford was consistently ranked
in the national standings due to
his passing ability. He established
passing records in the Border
Conference which still- stand and
was named All Border Confer-
ence quarterback for three con-
secutive years.
Ford graduated from Hardin-
Simmons in 1950 with a degree
in physical education. He began
his coaching duties in Rotan and
has remained there for the last
three years serving as head
coach this year. Ford will leave
Rotan at the end of the term and
report to Abilene High.
Dick Barrett 20 Hardin-Simmons
University cowboy from
Ryan Okla. in addition to win-
ning the national Intercollegiate
Rodeo Association all-around
cowboy title in 1952 has been
judge and jury of the natipn's
college rodeo the past year.
Dick will complete his first
term as NIRA proxy at the
Champioinship Rodeo here May
14-16 and step into office to
serve the only second term in the
group's history.
Barrett is the product of a 5000
acre ranch near Ryan on which
he and his father raise whiteface
cattle and race horses.
Adopt at Administration
Barrett has proven to the colle-
gians that he is as adept at ad-
ministration of rodeo affairs as
he is in actual competition. Un-
der his tutalege the past year
several new members have come
into the fold and the operating
funds of the association have
risen from nothing to several
thousand dollars.
Although Hardin-Simmons is
sponsoring the rodeo for NIRA
this year Barrett was faced with
the problem of insuring the cow-
boys good stock acceptable prize
lists competent judges chute
workers and decisions of all con-
troversies that might raise dur-
ing the rodeo here.
Since becoming top hand ad-
ministratively in the collegiate
rodeo work Barrett's record in
the arena has declined which
is the case in most competition.
A cowboy is either going all-out
in the arena or only patially at
his best if he has other duties.
Act As Judge
Barrett is called upon at all
college rodeos over the nation to
act as judge and give decisions on
the many problems that arise at
any place. He and the board of
directors have full powers to
take any reasonable action for
preservation of the association.
He is the sole possessor of power
to call a board of directors meet-
ing for action.
Although far down the list in
all-around champion points this
year the Oklahoman has still re-
tained the lead in his favorite
rodeo event bareback bronc rid-
ing. He is recognized as the best
in the college rodeo world.
Barrett also competes in pro
fessional rodeos and is a consist-
ent money winner defraying his
school expenses and providing
himself with a comfortable in-
come. Ail-Around Champ
Winning the all-around cham-
pion title in 1952 Barrett also
took championships in bareback
ribbon roping second in calf rop
ing and third in bulldoggmg. He
scored 2500 points on the colle-
giate circuit while his nearest
competitor managed only 1500.

This is his third year of rodeo-
ing. He started at Oklahoma
A&M where he attended school
before transferring to Hardin-
Simmons in September of 1952.
Barrett said that he is deeply
appreciative of the fine work the
university here is doing in spon-
soring the NIRA championship
rodeo for the collegiate champion
teams and performers. He was
instrumental in bringing the
"rodeo of champions" to Hardin-
Simmons from the national NIRA
convention at Albuquerque N.
M. in December of 1952.
Barrett will be working with
his fellow team members on the
H-SU rodeo team to help bring
the team championship o f the na-
tion and the final rodeo to rest in
Abilene.
All hands on the rodeo circuit
have expressed their belief in
the NIRA top hand's ability.
Barrett is a junior at H-SU ma-
joring in agriculture. After 'col
lege his plans center on profes-
sional rodeo and ranching.
