Cowboy
Corner
by Larry Fanning
In this first article I would like to take the opportunity to praise
the efforts of Larry Moreno for his work in men's intramurals. Larry
has been the student intramural head since he came to Hardin-
Simmons three years ago. In these three years he has had to adapt to
three different faculty intramural heads each who has had a differ-
ent way he wanted to run the program. And the job as intramural
head itself does not always make you the most favorite person on
campus. No matter what Larry does someone will be unhappy. It's
very possible that along the way Larry has made some mistakes but
I really feel Larry's only fault is that he is human and people in the
intramural program have expected him to be perfect.
Because of his duties as head of intramurals Larry has not been
able to compete as .much as he would like but he has been able to
compete enough to make a definite impact in intermurals. His best
sport is volleyball in which he is one of the best on campus. For the
last three years his intramural team the Gents have won the men's
volleyball championsip.
When Larry graduates this May it is going to be very hard to find
someone who will spend the time and energy that Larry has spent
Thanks Larry.
If you read about the Cowboy tennis team losing to the University
of Texas do not be so disappointed. The Pokes still have a good team
it just that UT's team has already beaten Southern Cal's team which
is the number two'team in the nation. Besides they did beat Baylor
so at least we have the best Baptist team in Texas. N
Several Hundred
To Visit Campus
Several hundred high school
students have made reserva-
tions for the "Weekend View of
H-SU" beginning Friday at
Hardin-Simmons University.
Only those students who have
indicated an interest in H-SU
were invited Ed Jackson direc-
tor of recruiting said.
Most of the visitors will arrive
Friday afternoon and will spend
the night in residence halls on
campus. Rooms and hosts or hos-
tesses will be assigned Friday
afternoon. That night the first
120 of the students to make re-
servations will be guests for the
musica "Dames at Sea" in Van
Ellis Theater. The others will be
entertained by the Baptist Stu-
dent Union or may use the
game room and bowling facilties
in Moody Center.
Musical entertainment and
refreshments are scheduled for
10:30 p.m. Friday in Moody
Center.
New Club Formed
For All Joggers
A new club has been formed
for all the joggers on campus.
The 100 mile club has proved to
be a big success and now a new
club called the 500 mile club is
in effect.
The 500 mile club is not a one
semester project. The program is
not set at a specific dead line.
The rules for the 500 mile club
follow.the same rules as the 100
mile club. The rules are (1) it is
not to be completed in one
semester. (2) only three miles
can be accomplished in one day.
(3) obtain a chart and place it on
the wall of Roseficld House. (4)
record and date the distance
that you can run each time. (5)
partners are recommended for
your own pleasure.
The club has been formulated
to promote physical activity and
fun while you accomplish a
given goal.
The Saturday morning Pro-
gram in Behrens Chapel-
Auditorium will include discus-
sions of admission procedure fi-
nancial aid religious life and
student activities. Also a film
titled "Famous Are Thy Halls"
will be shown by the Depart-
ment of Speech and Drama.
Campus tours and faculty en-
counter sessions will be held
from 10:30-12 noon. Members of
the H-SU Student Foundation
will conduct the tours.
The formal schedule will be
completed by Saturday lun-
cheon in the University
Cafeteria.
Cowboy 9
Drops 2; Net
Team Wins
Hardin-Simmons' tennis
team became the top Baptists in
the sport in Waco last weekend
when it topped Baylor 5-4 in the
early hours of the morning Sun-
day. While the 'Pokes netters
were basking in the warmth of
the win the baseball team was
tasting bitter defeat at the
hands of Lubbock Christian Col-
lege. LCC won a doubleheader from
the baseball team with a
seventh-inning grand slam
homer in the first game and then
shutout the Cowboys 9-0 in the
second game.
The tennis team's win came at
2 a.m. Sunday morning after
cold weather forced the match
inside and already-scheduled
Judo tournament halted the
start until 7 p.m.
It was 4-4 going into the final
doubles match of the night and
Sam Courington and Fred Scott
would not be denied They whip-
ped Lyndell Piqkett and Churck
Dorrity 6-4 6-4 to ice the dual
match win for H-SU
Cowboys Win;
Score 84 Points
Last Home Game
It was the last home game for
four senior Cowboys and each
one of the seniors responded by
scoring in double figures.. In fact
six of the Pokes scored in double
figures and the Pokes eased by
Panhandle State 84-74.
Neither team shot that good of
a per centage from the floor
with both teams shooting less
than 40 per cent. From the free
throw line though the Pokes
shot a fine 24 of 27. Also the
Pokes found a team they could
out rebound. The Cowboys rip-
ped off 70 rebounds during the
game.
The Pokes took command of
the game at the beginning and
held a 39-23 half time lead. The
Aggies came close to catching
the Pokes during the second half
when Donnie Wood was on the
bench because of foul trouble.
This was the first time Wood had
been on the bench since De-
cember. Wood came back in and
the Cowboys fought off the Ag-
gies rally.
Wood scored 24 in his final
home game as a Cowboy. John
Blackwell had one of his best
nights scoring 14 and coming up
with 11 rebounds.
The Pokes finish out their
season on the road tomorrow
night against Centenary Uni-
versity. Girls Given Chance
At New Track Team
ATTENTION ALL GIRLS!!!
What is the female's point of
view on the very popular women
sport track? There are many
girls on campus that are very
talented in athletic events and
now a strong possibility of form-
ing a girls track team is at hand.
The forming of such a program
will depend wholly on the in-
terest shown.
Women in sports is an impor-
tant aspect on every campus.
The high schools take part in
women athletics and the ques-
tion now exists about forming a
good women's athletic program.
If there is any girl on campus
interested in forming a women's
track program please contact
Coach Peggy Barney. The future
of women athletics on campus is
now in the hands of the ladies
don't pass it up!
ADA FEASTER shows her stuff against McMurry in a recent game against
McMurry. The Cowgirls are struggling this season but Feaster is the team-'s
leading scorer and rebounder. Against SMU she scored 24 points and had 16
rebounds. In last weekend's tournament the Cowgirls feel to North Texas 65-42
and Eastfield 78-60.
