Theater starts second season
by Shawnie Maffet
The HSU theater department
is working to initiate a "second
season" of plays. A second
season would consist of two
shows in the summer and one
in the fall and spring in addition
to Van Ellis productions.
Sara Wetzel senior theater
major proposed the idea for a
project in her theater
management class. Wetzel's
goal for this project is to allow
students to "work with new
types of literature and plays."
The second season could be
directed by students or faculty
who otherwise would not be
able to direct. This project
would enable more students to
participate in theatrical
productions. "The purpose is
to enhance student experience
(and to allow students) a
chance to work with other
directors" Wetzel said. This
will also prepare interested
theater students with little or
no theater experience for bigger
shows.
The second season of shows
will run on a smaller budget
but will have diverse places to
perform. Instead of being
limited to Van Ellis Theater
these plays may be performed
using whatever space is
available. Second season will
also promote original scripts;
this will allow students who
would like to write to be
involved.
Wetzel said that when she
came up with her idea she
wanted to "take the proposal
and fly with it." She brought
her proposal to Dr. Trish
McAdams associate professor
of theater and head of the
department of theater who
helped her set up a production
board. The production board
will read through the show
proposals and decide what is to
be shown during the second
season.
The board is currently
working out details and setting
guidelines. Wetzel feels that
having the right attitude toward
this new program is one of the
most important steps in getting
it going. The production board
hopes to have a list of second
season plays out by April.

photography at Frost
by Richard Ruane
"It's magic. It's an easy way
for me to capture things that
are interesting or beautiful
about the world" said Dr. Larry
Fink assistant professor of
English at Hardin-Simmons
University about his
photography.
Fink and Dr. John Peslack
head of the department of
chemistry and physics
currently have several pieces of
their work on display at HSU.
Fink's photography focuses on
people and places in Abilene
Buffalo Gap and Llano Texas
as well as Searcy Arkansas.
Peslack's photograhy focuses
on animals and scenic sites
around the United States.
Fink and Peslack were invited
to display their work in the
University's gallery by Bob
Howell the gallery's director
and professor of art at HSU.
"He'd seen some of our
work and we showed him
some and he was pleased with
it" said Fink.
Both men are self-taught
photographers. Fink has been
interested in photography since
high school and Peslack picked
up photography shortly after
moving to Abilene where he
had to give up fishing.
"I sold my fishing boat and
bought my first camera"
Peslack said.
