Three memorial scholarships were
established at Hardin-Simmons
University this summer one of those
being in memory of Erin Greer of Kilccn
who was killed in an auto accident along
with two other students last February.
Greer an HSU
sophomore at the time
of her death was hon-
ored through an
endowed scholarship
created by her par-
ents Mr. and Mrs.
Andy Greer of Kilcen.
The scholarship
will be awarded by
the Board of Young
Associates to students who "demonstrate
a strong academic record leadership in
campus life and activities and personal
commitment to HSU's goals and ideals"
according to Charles Richardson of media
relations.
During her two years at HSU Erin
was involved in Baptist Student
Ministries and the Sigma Alpha social
club. She participated in Student
Congress and was a member of HSU's
Student Foundation.
Also honored this summer through
scholarship foundations were Joe Biggs
of Odessa and Dr. H.W. and Alma
Mclntyre of Abilene.
Biggs who died in November 1995
at the age of 61 was a 1959 graduate of
HSU and a member of its football team
from 1956 to 1958.
Prior to his coming to HSU Biggs
played football for the University of
Texas at Austin and served his country in
the U.S. Army. He followed up his mili-
tary service with a brief return to UT
before transferring to HSU and returning
to football under legendary head coach
Sammy Baugh.
Joe played professional football for
the Chicago Bears Washington Redskins
and New York Jets before becoming an
important part of Odessa's business com-
munity. He was born in Eola and was a mem-
ber of HSU's Board of Development at
the time of his death. Just one month
prior to his death Joe was honored for his
athletic accomplishments with an induc-
tion into HSU's Athletic Hall of Fame.
Dr. H.W. and Alma Mclntyre for-
merly of Sweetwater moved to Abilene
following his retirement from a long time
dental practice in 1986.
Dr. Mclntyre was a graduate of the
University of Texas Dental College in
Houston and his wife the former Nannie
Alma Smith received her teaching degree
at West Texas State College in Canyon.
The two were married in Roscoc in
1927 and proceeded to live in Sweetwater
for nearly 60 years of their lives.
They moved to Abilene upon his
retirement to live at the Hendrick Home
for Children. He past away in 1995 and
she in 1988.
The scholarship .was made possible
due to the recent selling of an orange
grove that was given to HSU by the
Mclntyres in 1968.
