If the earth is nearer the sun in win-
ter than in summer, why is it colder in
winter, or when wo are noaroet tho
aun, than in summer, when we are far-
ther away from tho sun?
The earth is nearer the sun when it
is winter in the northern hemisphere,
but it is summer at that time in the
southern hemisphere. The distance of
the earth from the sun is not what
produces the change of seasons, hut
the angle at which the sun's rays
strike the earth. In winter the sun.
even at noon, never rises very high in
the sky, while in summer it Is almost
directly overhead. So the sun’s rays
are scattered over a much larger area
of the earth's surface In winter than
In summer, and. though the surface is
nearer the sun In winter, this is not
sufficient to compensate for the much
larger area that must he heated by
the same amount of sunshine.
I have a coin which I believe to bo
vary valuable, but I do not care to send
it away to a coin dealer, and I cannot
find its value in a coin book.
A safe way to have your coin valued
would lie to make an impression of
both sides of the coin on white paper
with the unshnrpenod end of a pencil
and send it to a coin dealer.

ments of the postal service have been
known to walk out, but such occur-
rences are exceedingly rure.
Why is Servia ao anxious to have a
pert on the Adriatic tea? Why does
Austria object?
Serviu lias no seacoast and can reach
the ocean only by permission of the
countries around her, and these coun-
tries are able to Impose such duties
and taxes on articles carried through
their territory 119 practically to regu-
late the export trade of Serviu. To
encnpo the domination of her neighbors
In tilts matter Servia’s one ambition in
the war is to obtain a seaport of her
own. fret* from outside influence. To
accomplish this Servia would be obliged
to cross the path of Austria in her ad-
vance southward toward Salonlkl.
There Is therefore a clash of interests
ms to the ownership of the territory de-
sired by both.

Twenty Merry Maidens, Twenty
Blushing Brides. Twenty
Happy Grooms.
• • •
New York, May 5.—Twenty
blushing brides ran. down the
gang plank of the steamship
California today into the arms of
twenty eager bridegrooms. Glad-
ness reigned until the immigra-
tion authorities found that eight
of the girls could not prove their
identity and told them they could
not remain unless they were mar-
ried at Ellis Island, the immigra-
tion detention station. When the
other twelve heard this, they said
they would all stand together and
the twenty couples left for the
island to find a clergyman. The
prospective brides came from
Scotland and Ireland and the im-
migration authorities said they
were the prettiest, as well as the
largest company that ever came
here to be married.

famous Martha Washington Comfort Shoes made only by the
F. Mayer Boot & Shoe Co., of Milwaukee, have caused dis-
honest dealers to sell cheap and inferior imitations to their
