Poke Cagers Face Midwestern
Monday In Revenge Battle
BEADY FOR RE-MATCH Charles Dishman 6-1 junior guard is
all set for a return match with the Midwestern Indians Monday
night. Up to the McMurry contest Dishman was averaging 13.2
points per game for the Cowboys.
By FRANKLIN BALES
The Hardin - Simmons Univer-
sity Cowboys will depend on de-
fense to stop You John Henry
Young and Inc. when they meet
the Midwestern University In-
dians in Wichita Falls Monday
night.
The game is expected to feature
a tinge of just about everything
one could expect in good college
basketball including defense of-
fense individual stars and overall
balance. It is doubtful that either
team will coast to an easy win.
Coach Lou Henson will not use
a two-on-one defense using two
men to guard one. He says if this
is done it will leave one man
open to score high and he will
make up the difference.
The one-two punch that led the
Wichita Falls outfit past the
Cowboys (75-64) Jan. 16 was re-
serve guards Keith Swanson (22
points) and Jim Wall (7 points)
aided by the high scoring of Hohn
Henry Young and Earl Beechum
14 and 19 points respectively.
Coach Henson also has able re-
serves in 6-5 forward Mike Fore-
man 6-3 guard David Hales 5-10
guard Mac Wilburn 6-2 forward
Fred Hicks and 5-10 guard Dickey
Neal.
Swanson and Wall came off the
bench in the final seven minutes
of the first Cowboy-Indian game
and sparked the Red River tribe
to a victory.

made a habit of beating Abilene
teams this season but should
have difficulty scalping the Cow-
boys that look like the Cowboys
of the early season. Another
barier will be the performance
of G-7 Ron Zeigler who has been
instrumental in the last two Cow-
boy victories. Zeigler replaced
center Charles Rappard when his
eligibility expired at the end of
the fall semester.
H-SU has averaged 83 points in
their last two games Southwest-
ern (102-60) and Texas Lutheran
(04-53).
The Cowboys will go into the
contest with a 12-5 slate.

Heads-up defensive play helped
the Hardin-Simmons University
Cowboys defeat the Texas Luth-
eran College Bulldogs 64-53 in
Seguin Saturday night for their
second successive win on the
road.
H-SU held the Texas Lutheran
Bulldogs to only 15 points in the
first half. The win gave Coach
Henson's Cowboys their 12th vic-
tory against five losses. The
Bulldogs have an 8-6 season slate
with a 3-1 record in conference
play.
Henson attributed the win to
good defensive play and said fol-
lowing the game "We were real
pleased with our defense against
both Texas Lutheran and South-
western." The Pokes downed
Southwestern Friday night.
In the Saturday night contest
Henry Peacock and Charles Dish-
man led the Poke attack with 15
points. Dick Nagy and Clarence
McHenry added 14 and 12 points
respectively.
Ellwood Hermansen collected 22
points to finish as the game's top
point-maker while teammate Dan
Schlender was busy collecting 15
points.
Peacock the Pokes' leading
scorer and rebounder hit 13 of
his total points in the last half
while McHenry netted 10 in the
first half. Dishman aided Pea-
cock in the second half by net-
ting 11 of his points.
Texas Lutheran nipped the
Cowboys in the rebounding de-
partment 29-27. McHenry was
the Pokes' top rebounder with 11.
The Pokes shots hit on 24 of 51
atempts for a 47 per cent from the
floor. The Bulldogs made good
on 17 of 40 floor attempts for a
42 per cent average.
The Pokes built up a 10-1 lead
early in the game and went into
the dressing room at intermission
with a 53-48 margin.
With eight minutes remaining
in the game the Bulldogs nar-
rowed the margin to 53-48 but
could not overtake the Cowboys.

Southwestern Win
Defense and four players hit-
ting in the double digits helped
the Hardin-Simmons University
Cowboys down the Southwestern
University Pirates 102-60 Friday
night in Georgetown extending
their season record to 11-5.
Clarence McHenry led the
Pokes' attack with 19 points.
Helping McHenry outscore the
Georgetown crew was Ron Zeig-
ler and Henry Peacock connect-
ing for 15 points apiece. Guard
Charles (Lyndon) Dishman add-
ed his talents by getting 14 of
the total points. Lynn Funk was
high for the losers with 13
points.
Zeigler and Peacock shared re-
bounding honors by hauling in 15
apiece.
Zeigler playing his first game
of the year placed giant Charles
Rappard at center. Both Cowboy
stars were left with one semester
of eligibility at the close of the
1963-64 basketball season. Coach
Lou Henson used Happard for the
first half of the season and held
Zeigler over for the last half of
the season.
H-SU was hot from the floor
hitting on 43 of 75 attempts for
a good 75 per cent but it was the
defense that proved to be the big
factor. The Pirates were forced
to do their shooting from outside
and managed only 18 of 56 tries
for a dismal 32 per cent.
