Bald Eagle Nest Discovered

Eagle enthusiasts in
Texas have a bit of good
news mixed with some
bad.
The first nest of a
southern bald eagle, an
endangered species,
documented in Northeast
Texas was discovered
early this spring on a
ranch in Red River Coun-
ty.
Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department
biologist Hayden Haucke
of Detroit said a pair of
mature eagles apparent-
ly built the nest during
the winter and hatched at
least one eaglet in April.
However, Haucke said
a late-April storm ap-
parently caused the lone
fledgling to be blown or
fall from the nest
“I observed one of the
parent eagles feeding one
or more voung on April
20." Haucke said "When
I checked the area on
May l. I discovered the
dead eaglet on the ground
under the tree.”
Haucke said observa-
tions of other bald eagle
nests suggest that despite
the untimely storm, the
pair likely will return for
another nesting attempt
there next spring.
The nest, which
Haucke estimated is
eight feet wide and
several feet deep, is
situated about 70 feet up
in a 100 foot tall cotton-
wood tree.
