Here’s one of my grandmoth-
er’s favorite poems—like so
many worthwhile poems, the
author is unknown. The title
is “Do It Now”:
If you’ve got a job to do,
Do it now!
If it’s one you wish were
through,
Do it now!
If you’re sure the job’s your
own,
Don’t hem and haw and groan.
Do it now!
Don’t put off a bit of work,
Do it now!
It doesn’t pay to shirk,
Do it now!
If you want to fill a place
And be useful to the race,
Do it now!

Or postpone until it's late,
You hit up a faster gait—
Do it now!

O DEAL THE YEAR
FLATONIA, TEXAS

Here’s an item of South-
western history:
Six men were hanged at one
time in Fort Smith, Ark., by
one springng of the trap door.
All were convicted murderers
and were condemoed by the
famous hanging judge, Judge
Parker, who presided over
federal court, which had juris-
diction over Indian Territory,
then the hideout of hundreds
of criminals.
One of the six was found
guilty of the murder of a 19-
year-old boy—and a pair of
boots led to conviction and
execution. The father of the
slain youth testified that his
son and the defendant had left
Texas together for Indian Ter-
ritory and that sometime be-
fore the departure, he gave
his son a pair of boots. At the
same time, the father bought
himself a pair exactly like
those he gave to the boy. The
heel on the son’s left boot came
off and he put it back on with
three horseshoe nails.
The defendant was wearing
in the courtroom a pair of
boots just like those that the
slain man’s father hed on. The
left boot was removed from
the prisoner's foot and in the
heel w^re three horseshoe
nails.
And so the pair of boots sent
the man to the gallows.
Rev. Theo. T. Janysek and
his niece, Miss Rosie Janysek,
visited relatives at Helena
