Internationally-known gourmet chef David Wade, left, gets organized in the Martins Mill school cafeteria
kitchen with volunteer cooks Bobbie Andrews, Lena Peel, Darlene Mangum and Abbie Mewbourn, left to
right, May 26. Wade cooked up 80 gallons of chili and stew (with 18 pounds of his own special spices) to
feed over 300 people at the South Van Zandt Volunteer Fire Deportment's chili supper. The supper, the
first major fund-raising event sponsored by the newly-formed SVZVFD, made the department over $1,200,
according to Fire Chief Tim Meredith. (Photo by Kerry Yancey)

MARTINS MILL
Having a famous gourmet
chef prepare the stew aided
a very successful chili and
stew supper for the South
Van Zandt Volunteer Fire
Department last Saturday.
The newly-formed de-
partment cleared over
$1,200 from the supper,
which featured some 80
gallons of chili and stew
made by Tyler chef David
Wade. Over 300 tickets
were purchased, according
to SVZVFD Assistant Chief
Tim Meredith, who noted
that probably more per-
sons than that were served.
Wade, who has his own
radio and television shows,
donated all of his time Sat-
urday and some 18 pounds
of special spices (worth
around $360) to the sup-
per, Meredith noted.
Wade arrived at the
Martins Mill School Cafe-
teria about an hour late,
explaining that a fire had
broken out at his Dallas
home earlier that morning.
"He said his house was full
of smoke when he left,"
Meredith reported. Da-
mage to Wade’s house
was apparently minor, he
added.

The next meeting of the
SVZVFD is slated for 7:30
p.m. Tuesday at the Tun-
dra Baptist Church.
"We’re going to be
spreading our meetings
around to all of the com-
munities that we cover,"
Meredith explained. A reg-
ular meeting night or
nights will be set at the
Tuesday meeting, he ad-
ded.
Reports about the chili
supper, the garage sale and
the three weekends of bar-
becue dinner proceeds
from the Eagle Ranch
Restaurant will also be pre-
sented at the meeting, he
said.
"We appreciate every-
one who attended our chili
supper, and the support
everyone has given to us,"
Meredith said.
