National Nutrition
Month Campaign
The Archer County Extension
Agent Kathryn Carnes wants to
remind all residents that the
month of March has been des-
ignated by the American and
Texas Dietetic Associations as
one component of the 1997 EAT
RIGHT AMERICAN "All Foods
Can Fit" campaign. During this
month she will be conducting
educational programs and ac-
tivities to learn more about how
to eat healthful, select health-
ful choices of foods when eating
all types of food fare including
healthful choices for all sea-
sons. Knowing how to modify
your own recipes to reduce fat,
saturated fatty acids, choles-
terol. sugar and sodium and
how to increase your dietary
calcium are all important.
You can see how easy it is to
incorporate the foods you like
within a healthful eating style
by choosing a diet that follows
the dietary recommendations
of the USD A Food Guide Pyra-
mid and also is varied, moder-
ate and balanced. The Pyramid
is simply an outline of what to
eat daily. It is no rigid prescrip-
tion, but gives a general guide
that permits you to select
healthful choices within each
group. That helps to insure
that you obtain necessary nu-
trients with enough calories to
maintain a healthy weight.
The Pyramid also focuses on
fat because most Americans eat
too much fat in their diet. Fol-
lowing the Pyramid will help
you to keep your intake of total
fat and saturated fat low. By
lowering the fat in your diet,
you can reduce the chances of
getting certain diseases while
also help you maintain a healthy
diet.
In addition, for your copy of 4
special healthful recipes avail-
able from the American Heart
Association - - grilled chicken
burgers, fresh herb potato
salad, bran muffin breakfast
trifle and sherbet parfaits - -
contact your local County Ex-
tqnsion Office by telephoning
574-4914. See how easy it is to
start making these simple
lifestyle choices. If you want to
