the mother's opinion about the
importance of serving foods rich
in the vitamin.
“Where the mother had some
knowledge of nutrition and the
father a higher than average in-
come and educational level, the
families were likely to have a
satisfactory intake of vitamin C
rich foods," a nutrition special-
ist points out.
However, where the mother
had little nutrition knowledge or
the father a low income, vitamin
C intake was below recommend-
ed levels.
Vitamin A helps keep mucous
membranes firm and resistant
to infection and the skin smooth
and soft. It also protects from
night blindness.
Eat foods daily, such as eggs,
deep yellow squash, pumpkin,
sweet potatoes, carrots, apri-
cots, cantaloupe or dark green
leafy vegetables, broccoli or
green peppers for vitamin A.
A serving each day of grape-
fruit, orange, cantaloupe or trop-
ical fruits, raw strawberries,
broccoli, brussels sprouts,
green pepper or sweet red pep-
per will be adequate for vita-
min C.

There’s something about green
vegetables that turns up little
noses at the dinner table.
This may be the reason many
American children, while fairly
well fed, have diets low in two
important vitamins —A and C.
A recent study at the Univer-
sity of Minnesota showed chil-
dren's vitamin A intake related
to their feelings toward dark
green and yellow vegetables and
low ceiling with light ceiling
paper or by using striped paper
on the walls.
To pack shoe polish for travel,
wrap in plastic or enclose in a
small plastic bag. Be sure the
cap is tight. Heat and pressure
can cause leaking of even the
tightest packages.
Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Mangum
and their daughter and family,
Mr. and Mrs. Don Wilkins and
sons, David and Dwayne, return-
ed last week from a two-week
vacation when they went to
Charleston, S. C.
They visited a son and his fam-
ily, Mr. and Mrs. Butch Mangum
and children, Ricky, Frank, Alice
and Bubba. Young Mangum is
stationed there with the Navy
and is scheduled to sail about
Nov. 12 for Vietnam.
The Texans were escorted on
a tour of a submarine, The Trout,
and also the ship which usually
accompanies it. They enjoyed a
25-mile boat trip which made it
possible for them to view many
points of interest. They also
started a sight-seeing walking
trip along cobblestone streets,
saw the slave markets and many
other historical spots.
En route home they stopped
in Smoky Mountain National Park
as well as other scenic places.
