down here. Its a fine time for
boating and bogging. Every
branch was big yp Monday and
Lavaca and Rocky creeks were
very wide.
. The cotton that was hot up
will most of it have to be planted
over again, and some corn is se-
riously damaged as to thestand.
The genered health of the com-
munity is good so far as we have
heard.
There was to have been a par-
ty at Mr, Ed. Jacobs Monday
night but we think the . weather
prevented it. There was also to
have been a dance at Mr. Harley
Calloway’s Monday night.

ed Mr. Thos. Reagan Sr. and Mr.

ing a few days visiting relatives

Mrs. Speer, first assistant in
the Halletsville Graded School,
received a telegram from her hus-
band who is in Louisville, Kj.y
to resign her position at once
and come to Louisiville. She
tendered her resignation, which
was accepted by the Board of
Trustees and Floyd Zurn watt
was elected to take charge of her
room and Jimmie Howerton wan
elected supernumerary.
It would be better for ns an
men not to make quite so many
dollars, perhaps not to achieve
so much public honor, if that be
our ambition and to invest more
of/our time and eneigy in the
welfare and character of orir
boys and girls. The accumula-
tion of a few thousand dollars
would be a poor compensation
to a father for his son s charac-
ter. But we each reason, “Oh
the danger is not to my boy> it -
is my neighbor’s boy.” Let on
invest a few dollars of our mon-
ey in the upbuilding of our homfe
school and then we can keep op»r
boys and girls at home where
we can give them more of pur
time ana attention. •

7--What came near resulting in
a fatal accident occurred Thurs-
day afternoon! J. B. Holman
had been out to the residence of
his uncle. Colonel John T. Hol-
man. Just Us he was mounting
jlis horse to leave, tbe animal
became frightened and began to
run. Air, Holman’s foot nad be-
come lodged in the ’stirrup Und
he was thrown violently to the
ground and dragged by the horse
for several hundred yards, the
animal making repeated efforts
to kick him. In that it was suc-
cessful two or three times, once in
•the ribs and once ouce on the
hand. The animal was finally
surrounded and captured; and!
Air. Holman released from his
perilous position, in a badly
bruised condition. Medical , at-
tention was immediately given
him, End while he is not fatally
injured he will be a very sore
man fur several weeks. It is .the
