tHcatreSt ears and dorm rooms.
Heootty they light up their
etgeteUes and unhappily we
breathe their aeeond-hand

reetrooms oara m! bUmms. They
walk Into our rooms and
demand ashtrays. If there are
none they poke through our
drawers and etoeeU til) they find
an old paper cup. We spend the
next few minutes wondering if
they are going to set it afire.
Sometimes they do. They flip
aehes on our floors and
furniture. They amoke at the
table mingling the odor of their
exhaled amoke with that of the
eafeteria beef atew whleh
didn't smell all that good to
begin with. Yea it k time for us
to apeak ap In oar own defense.
We have given this matter a
good deal of thought and we
realise that many non-amokers
are timid peraons who have no
wish to speak unpleasantly to
thoae who offend them. Be
brave you lovers of freeh air; the
angels and the American Med leal
Association are on your aide!
There is merit to the direct
approaeh; one can simply say
"Put that naety thing out." Or
more courteously "Please don't
moke." One might post atgna on
his walk or keep a gas mask
bandy to wear when all else falls.
We have prepared a few
ample conversations between
the smoker and the more
retieent abatalner. If one k not
prepared to lose friends over hk
demand for freeh air he may try
some of the following.
Smoker: "Mind If I smoke?"
Breather: "Not if you don't
mind if I cough a lot."
Smoker: "Mind if I smoke."
Breather: "Not if you don't
exhale.
On an ahrpkne the following
might be effective.
Smoker: "Mind If I amoke?"
Breather; "Not ir you step
eufctde."
A really subtle hint one
whleh worka only on the moet
enaltlve of amokers k simply to
whistle a few bars of "Smoke
Gete in your Syea." Thk k more
likely to work If combined with
the oetentallotM use of eyedrop.

inquiry
Dear Inquiry
I am plmuM that the Optimist Is finally going to include the
student's voice this semester. Try thk question on for site. The ACQ
on-camrm students art required to buy a meal tkket eaeh paying
about $230 a semester for a meal ticket. Thk might not be a hot of
money for a college president but to a student it it 3 or 4 weeks of
hard summer's work. I think that the student deserve to know
where and how our ahnott one-half million dottan k used m the
Bean.

In recent weeks the Optimist has become aware of the student
discontent surrounding the Been. Because of this discontent and the
letter above Inquiry interviewed Dick FeKs Manager of the Been.
To the surprise of Inquiry the Bean is run as a non-profit
"organisation." Bach student pays about 83c for each meal during
the semester. For the week of January 16-22 the Bean's total
expenditures were $1.01 a meal. Thk figure Includes basic
foodstuffs preparation serving and cleanup. Of course the Bean's
expenditures vary from week to week but the figure above k
representative of an average week. Figures showed that $415000
will be spent for baste foodstuffs thk semester.
Certainly everything k not as It should be in the Bean. Dick Felts
was the first to admit that there is much room for improvement.
"The freneh fries are soggy and cold" "the rolls are hard" and "thk
cake has been around a week" are just a few of the comments heard
every week in the Bean. Apparently the fault often lies with inferior
preparation methods rather than poor basic food quality.
A student-study committee might provide the spark needed to
bring about some much needed improvements. The student survey in
thk issue eooeeming likes and dislikes of Bean food may produce
some constructive suggestions for improving the cafeteria situation.
If you ttke these two suggestions please tell us. Get involved.
